Well today i went driving around in 85 degree weather like an idiot, got home and tried to start up the car again (dont ask, im just weird like that) car turned over REAL slow like the distributor was set too advanced. moved it a little and the same thing happened. was the car too hot? ive heard of overheating but never experienced a car not starting because its hot. Just trying to figure this out. temp was 193 with 180 thermostat. went out half an hour later and turned over fine.
I would think thats the route to go but... Check your battery and cables/connections as well. Bad cable/ground will give you the same symptoms. Good luck!!!
Get a newer gear reduction starter, they work much better than the old ones. It will be money well spent.
Did you mount the battery in the trunk ? I did with mine and thought I had big enough cables, but apparently not. It would do the same thing. Moved the battery back up front and it's never done it again.
Where would I find one, or part #? They would bolt up to the V8 engine? My starter's on the fritz too, works but sounds like a stuck pig when you try to turn it over.
I went to oreilly's and asked for a starter from an 82 mustang 5.0,its cheap smaller and cranks alot harder.
it happened when the car is hot so im leaning torward the heat shield and not a cranking problem. the headers are about an inch away from the starter and its a 91 mustang model about 10 months old.
Put the biggest battery cables you can find on it and then try it again. My cables are about a half inch in diameter and even hot it spins the starter on the 331 like its got a 4 cylinder in there. And this is a 10.5 to 1 comp motor.
ive had this car for 2 years and have had the headers on for about 2 months, this has never happened before so i highly doubt its the cables
Sometimes, starters get old. They tell you it's time to replace. Ran headers on my 302 Mavericks with no heat related starter problems. Get a new starter and some heavy gauge cables while you're at it. Should fix it right up.
