I recently changed out the distributor, plugs and wires. My car has a bit of trouble starting, but when it does it starts to kick off but will catch itself. It has a stutter and eventually shuts itself off. Even when I press the gas it cuts off. Possible fuel pump issue? Valves perhaps? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I'm assuming you replaced the distributor cap (not the entire distributor), wires and plugs trying to fix your problem? Or did this problem begin AFTER you completed the work? You can test for a fuel problem by seeing if you can get it to run using starting fluid by spraying it into the carb itself while cranking it. If it runs (probably not well, but it should run), then you indeed have a fuel delivery problem. Forgot to mention, when testing this way, be prepared for a backfire in case there are timing issues. A small fire could result, just be aware (and prepared).
It started a bit before I replaced everything but got much worse afterwords. I'm pretty sure it's a fuel problem. My float might be stuck or somthin. Possibly a weak fuel pump
are you sure its a fuel problem. did you replace the dirtubtor or just the cap and rotor? did you check the timing? with the motor off and the air cleaner off, look down the the top of the carb and move the linkage to full throttle. does any fluid squirt down the barrels?
Bryant has a good point. Did u replace el distributor. If so double check for nomber tdc. If u just replaced cap and rotor. It is always a good idea to check the base timing. I do it on all of my distributor cars. If u r sure u have correct firing orfer and base timing. Check for proper fuel pressure and volume. If that is good. Jump the the starter solenoid and when the engine turn over the cranking vacuum should pull fuel into the engine u should be able to see it. And do as bryant said and pull the throttle wide open and see if fuel sprays out and into the engine. I hope this helps. Good luck
I would sugest that you check the firing order and the spark plug wire locations to make sure they are correct first. If you have points and condenser in the distributor, make sure that the points are set properly and that the condenser is screwed down tight. If that is ok and if you had the distributor out of the car, you need to make sure that it was put in the engine correctly. You can be off one tooth on the distributor and mess things up. Loosen the distributor hold down bolt and ajust the timming to see if that makes a difference for the better. This will help you determine if the distributor is installed correctly.I hope this helps you. Good luck.
I hate to say it but you may want to get someone qualified to help here. Looking at your posts you are still learning the ways of the car enthusiast and it never hurts to have a mentor. Keep in mind that wrenching on your own stuff can save money but when you are chasing an issue you can figure out you could end up throwing more money at it in parts than it would have cost to have it fixed. By the way, where is "over the rainbow" located? Maybe you could hook up with a forum member that could help.
