Hey guys so i followed your guys device about hooking up a vacuum gauge and then a rpm gauge to the ignition but i found the screw for the idle (drivers side on the side of the carb) but what are the 2 screws on the front of the carb? one on the left and one on the right? i played with then and they are all the way out? when i am at idle and i give a little gas it dies and falls on its face? someone suggested screwing them in but which one or both? also what should stock timing be? i dont think the timing has ever been modified to be honest? Thanks
Those two screws are the mixture screws. They control how much fuel the engine gets at idle. Turen em back in till they stop (dont gorilla them) then back em out one and one half turn each. Timeing is set at 6deg BTDC.
not sure what carb you have but if it's a Edelbrock (carter) I,d throw it in the trash, when they work good there ok when they fail it's hard to get them straightend out. JUST MY OPINION
Its the stock setting (6deg) I would personally set it at 12 to 14 deg BTDC and go from there...The stock setting is marginal at best.
the two screws on the front are idle mixture screws as said before. each one is for half the intake manifold. try to keep them the same amount of turns. after you bottom them out and then back them out 1 turn, you will want to make 1/4 turn adjustments watching the vac. gage to see if the vac increases or decreases. if it increases then you going the right direction. if it decreases then your going the wrong direction. when you get to where the vac only drops no mater wich way you turn them then you have found the ideal idle mixture.
Oh also here is a stupid question, do I tune the car hot or what? And do I set the idle first then the mixture or the other way around?
Thank you guys I followed the forum recommendations and the comet is running great. I bought a used carb but I think the stock one I had was a newer version but I used the stock carb on the car and tuned it and wow 100 percent difference! I have a little stumble but nothing major . Now just need to adjust the timing and I am good! How low do you all have your idle? In gear and in park?
park is around 700 for me and in gear is 550-600 glad to here things worked out, shame my carb didnt get used.
