I agree with most of what you said, but I don't think that early EGR robbed horsepower. On a working system, as it still does today, it only dilutes the incoming charge at cruising speeds and maybe idle, depending on the system. It effectively reduces the engine's displacement. Under WOT, a working EGR system does not allow exhaust to flow into the intake. Now, it may be true that older systems failed more often than current systems and were not as efficient (efficient as in performing the best an EGR system can). EGR is not a bad thing at all.
That's what i meant to say, they were not that efficient. and that's not even getting into the Timing mods that they did... And i Know that a perfectly tuned engine will have less emissions Because it uses up most of the fuel, and it doesn't just get dumped into the air.
Hey, since so many guys are talking about what cam to get, I started a thread where I want to post as many cams as possible with a video and/or sound clip so you can hear the cam in action. I actually posted a sound clip of the Edelbrock Performer Plus cam when I had it in my car. Of course, when I bought it, it was called the Summit 3600, but same specs, and I heard that they were both made by the same company. E7 heads...check your local mustang forum, and keep an eye out for 5.0s in the junk yard. Probably better luck with the forums, but cheaper if you snag them from a junker. Same with the GT40s. Also ebay...but shipping would kill you if you didn't find them local.
Hey, not sure where lagrange is compared to you, but craigslist has a set of e7s for $50. http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/pts/1726876468.html Also 2 5.0 blocks with e7 heads for $120 each... http://chicago.craigslist.org/sox/pts/1732717698.html
My gt40s came off a fuel injected 97 ford explorer. I slapped them onto a 74 302 block, then onto an 88 roller block. all the same thing, All you need to do is swap the spings to match the cam. If mild roller cam, you should be ok, but if you go flat-tappet and/or large lifts, you will need to swap springs. You are looking at maybe $50 or so for new springs (maybe less, I bought mine "at cost" for $32 and swapped only because my lift is a bit more than stock). Ask the cam manufacturer what springs to buy, they will tell you exactly what you need.
