I've seen 1 Comet out here that was actually being driven other than my own. A beautiful thundering beast of a car. Dark purple if I remember correctly, and I've been keeping an eye out for him ever since. There's a 4 door Comet sitting in front of a transmission shop up on blocks with the rear end torn out. But I have yet to see an actual Maverick, driven or on blocks. My car is no prize, it needs a lot of TLC right now, but I get at least 1 compliment on it, per day from the older guys in our city.
It is like anything when they get old if they are likeable cars the collectors get them if not they are scrapped or left to return to the earth. Was talking about this yesterday. How many first generation Ford Escorts do you see? And those were from the 80's
I was thinking along the same lines. When the Maverick was still current and also some years later, it was pretty much as ignored as a Valient, Pinto, Citation, Duster/Dart, Escort etc. Just good simple reliable transportation but no way a collectable. We had Mustangs, Camaros, Vettes, Chargers, GTO's for that purpose. Once those collectable muscle cars started to reach a price level that was equal with some mid sized homes, it seemed that the second level of collectable cars kicked in. Folks started to look a lot closer at the "little brothers" of the car lines. By that time, not too many of them survived the scrap yards/crushers.
That's funny you mention the Ford Escort I had an 87 Escort GT fully loaded it even had wing windows. Out of curiosity I searched Craigslist awhile back and found 2 or 3 but nowhere near the condition mine was in when I traded it in.
Here in Florida, the cars tend to wear out rather than rust out. 15 years ago you used to see one in the local salvage yards every other month or so. Now it seems to be just 3 in the last 2 years ...about once every 8 months. These are busy metro yards, so cars get picked over for perhaps three months, and then are crushed to make way for fresh meat. Probably means that most all of the daily drivers were finally done, and the ones that are still out there are being held onto with thoughts of restoring. Two of the three that I just saw were hopeless rust buckets, beyond saving.
Missing Mavs There is a clean 75 4 door sitting in ABC Auto, West of Fort Worth TEXAS It is a white car it may have been turned on obambi's cash for clunkers, I do not know. If interested call: 817 237 7186 Texasjack
Nice try at throwing a political slant into the thread. You have no clue what the Cash For Clunkers Program was, do you?
Yep Raymond has a cool collection of stuff. I've gotta save up and pay him another visit. Probably next month...this month is a little rough cuz business has been slow due to the flooding.
As far clunkers go....here somebody started a pick a part (former NASCAR driver Jeff Purvis) and made a deal to buy all of the clunkers from the local dealers. Pay a few bucks to get in and the prices are cheap. Plenty of Explorers and more.
Last Summer I stopped at a gas station with my Maverick. I saw a guy looking at the car when I went in to Pay-first. When I came out he introduced himself and asked if it would be ok to take some pictures. He said he was here on business and he has seen more Mavericks here near Detroit then in San Diego CA where he is from. I thought it would be the other way around. He was on his way back to the airport to turn the rental in and fly home. We had a nice visit for about 1/2 hour or so than we both left. I guess there is Maverick and Comets all over the country. Mabe more then we think.
I see on average, maybe 2-3 Mavericks a year randomly driving on the road. I drive mine daily, and at almost 112,000 miles since Dec. 2005, I often wonder if it isn't the most driven Maverick of this century so far.. This board alone proves that there are tens of thousands of these cars still out there, they're all just hiding in people's garages, yards and junkyards.
Considering the last Maverick was built over 33 years ago, your not going to see them everyday. Even 20 years ago, here, they were few and far between, they didn't make it 10 years in the salt, very few cars did.
