So I'm just thinking out loud . . . but I've been contemplating getting a dart block . . . I know they make 302 that can be stroked pretty high and they make 351's as well. What are the block's horepower limits?

(Dear 331 stroker that's been sitting in my house since 2006, and been sitting in Bryant's shop for probably a year . . . please don't be offended. It's not that I'm trying to replace you . . . I'm just thinking, throwing around numbers and ideas, that's all. You have slowly grown into a short block and I'm proud of you for that. But maybe I'll never get a chance to make a 1000hp engine, maybe this is my opportunity to do so. I promise if I get rid of you I'll find you a great new home! Sincerely, your dreamer.)

dart block should hold 1000hp easily. At that power level it would destroy the rest of the drivetrain though. lol

We use this one, Although we are not making anywhere near the HP the block can stand. I will say this is one BIG BOY block. I was very impressed with all the aspects of it. I especially love the expanded cooling jackets, The Mustang we put it in had some cooling issues with the stock block, But after we installed this one the cooling issues was no more. Now they also make a aluminum version.

None of you have ever driven a 30 year old car(or any other car for that matter) thats putting 1000 hp to the wheels. So don't think that it's a cake walk. It takes an extremely experienced driver to control something like this on the street or the track.

I drove a M-88 in the Army when I was 18 years old, (1,000 hp) on the street too! Does that count???

so I figure 2-3K for the block, machine work 500-1000, 1500 for the crank, rods and pitons another 1K, heads (no idea . . . ), supercharger (3-4K) . . . how does that sound so far? am I missing any other major expenses?

I would say if your REALLY going to shoot for a 1,000hp motor just start figuring 10-15k for the motor alone.
EDIT: And think about this, do you really want a $20,000 motor in a $2000 car that if you ever think about getting rid of (I know, i know im NEVER going to sell my car, but how many can REALLY say they have ALWAYS had the same car) you will never get that kind of money back.

IMO WAY WAY WAY! overkill........ Anything over 500RWP is in my opinion barely streetable. ESP with a supercharger or turbo where the power is always on tap.

If you like driving your car and not a track only vehicle, I would stay away from the "big dyno number" hype.

The 331 with supercharger you already have in the mix is ALOT of motor for driving around. Thats enough power to take out a stock block pretty easily one bad tune and that block is going to split.

If I was you I would just keep your current combo in the works and also look at a sportsman block or a dart block to incorpirate to it. Or stay with a stock block and turn down the boost to where the motor is making 450 500. Thats still on the edge of a stock block but with a good tune proven to be reliable (well as reliable as it can be). That much power through any block and a bad tune its not a matter of IF its going to break but WHEN.

What are your long term goals of this car? Are you looking for a sub 10 second time slip, a fun weekend warrior?

Just don't get wrapped up in time slips, dyno numbers, or bench racing. Enjoy your car and have fun with it.

NEVER let your car own you!

I totally get your adivce, those are wise words. I would love to be able to have a streetable car that I can tune to get under 10sec on the track. Long term goals for the car is to be my daily driver like it has been since 2006. But I will probably see this 331 to the end and take it to the max and see what I can get out of it. 20K is a little crazy though, don't think that's realistic for me.
