I am wanting to take a 302 out of a 1987 grand marques and put it in my 1974 maverick and i have a few questions. Would buying a carb and intake be good enough or would i need to use a different distributor? Also can i use the tranny that is behind the motor now or would i need an older c4? I'm not sure if there are any electronics on this newer tranny that need the computer. Thank you
Trans is a AOD so there is no electronics to worie about, but here is where things get a little weird. If you are going carbarated you are going to have to use points or a duraspark ignition. The problem is that is a roller motor and you would need a bronze distributor gear.
You would need a distributor for a carburated car with a roller camshaft I believe, if you can find a 85 302 from a Mustang they have what you need. Make sure you use a steel gear on it (or bronze as mentioned above)You will also have to change the oilpan and pickup tube and either use an electric fuel pump or change timing chain cover so you can run a mechanical fuel pump. As for the transmission cant tell you for sure without knowing whats in it
