    could be bad gas.
    could be bad fuel filter.
    could be bad fuel pump.
    could have rust in tank.

has the car been tuned up?

what kind of carb? 302 or straight six?

The mounting flange on the intake may not be flat. This will cause the base of the carb to brake.

    Cometchick,
Get a new carburetor - not a rebuilt. There are only a few parts that actually wear on a carburetor. The throttle shaft and bore can wear if there is a lot of load placed on them - strong springs, maladjusted linkage and that sort of thing. Have someone hold the gas pedal to the floor and adjust your linkage so it just slips on at that point. use as light a return spring as you can and stiil get positive return of the throttle when you take your foot off the pedal.
The accelerator pump will wear over time - no fix but to rebuild the carb installing new parts.
The screws that hold it together should not come loose but if they do then remove the offending screw and put some Loc-tite #518 on the threads and put it back in. If the bolts that hold it down loosen then do the same to them. Check your motor mounts. If they are bad then the engine will rock to one side under a load and it can cause the air cleaner to hit the hood and break or loosen the bolts and screws holding the carb together.
A well assembled carb should last for years without any repairs.
