    Greetings, wise ones.

On average, what would you expect to pay for a rebuilt C4 auto tranny. now before anyone says it, by tranny, I mean transmission (my sister giggles everytime I mention something about my tranny, immature I tell's ya!)

I have a friend who will be helping install it, so i know i'll be saving most of my money there, but for now i'm shopping around, however no one want to give me quotes unless I bring my car to them.

I was just reading in the tech forum and my car is suffering from a "bad foward clutch" aka: Morning sickness according to the article.

It all depends on what you mean by rebuilt. standard overhaul or street strip the better the tranny the more you should exspect to pay.
paul s. would be a good person to ask he also rebuilds and builds trannys.
i would say at least 600$ to start but more like 800 to 1000$ with better clutchs and shift kit.

Prices are a local experience. In California, around the LA or SF areas you will pay upwards from $1200 for a simple rebuild. In Texas or Arizona in some of the smaller cities you may only pay $700 for the same.
Most shops want to do the removal and replacement because it is a money maker. They can do the job in an hour and the flat rate manual gives two + for it. A "bench" job (the only thing I do - and only for local folks) is going to cost about three to six hours of labor. Any national chain will require a new converter to get a warranty. That will add $150 - $300 to your price.
Jay, at Broader Performance, will charge you $900 (less your forum discount) for a C4 that will handle 500 hp. You use your own converter or buy a performance unit from him. You use your old bell housing. He doesn't list anything lower than that anymore but if you call him he might come down on the price for a lesser C4.
Either way you get a great C4 for a really good price.
You are too far away for me to build one for you so I can't help you. I build a 350 hp C4 for $750, 500 hp for $850 and from there up they get expensive. The ratings do not cover nitrous or supercharged applications.
If you are running a stock engine and have the stock C4 for a core then you should be able to rebuild it tourself for about $300. That covers the master o/haul kit, bushings and thrust washers, front band, modulator, rear band servo piston, a TransGo 40-2 reprogramming kit and a tube of loc-tite #518. You should probably invest in a "Bad Shoe Productions" video on how to rebuild a C4 which will run you about $20. Add to that 10 quarts of type F ATF and a can of cooler flush and you have everything you need. It will likely take the better part of three days for your first rebuild so plan on not being able to do it over a weekend.
There are some prices and some alternatives. I hope this has helped in some small way.

Just a man... with about 60 years of experience discovering new ways to do things... You would think that by now I would know which worked and which don't.
    sometimes....;)

The mav is gone but i'm still here!
that so true! my first c4 cost $1,236.58 when it was all said and done.

That was before i knew about this board and car stuff in general.

Now i feel so ripped off, especially since they didnt get it right the fist two times. But on the third try they did and its been running great for 8+ years. Then a couple of months ago i found out that the tranny shop that i used was also a chop shop :ignore:

    Hey Paul

to rebuild a C4 do you need any special tools? like a clutch spring compressor? or is there any way to make one?

    Thanks!

I blew the tranny last year. It took out part of the convertor also. The rebuild for a strip tranny, with all good parts was about $675 in Tucson. I took the tranny to them. The convertor had to go back to Hughes in Phoenix. Altogether almost $1000. I been running it for the second year with no problems yet. :)

Got both the Mav and Comet done at J&S Trasmission in Hawthorne, CA for 786.34. Would have been 1,000 with an external cooler, shift kit and whatnot. Got the kit for free for the Comet though since he knew my father's father.

I had a C6 rebuilt here in Charlotte NC about 3 years ago for $450. He supposedly built racing trannis for the local drag racers. The local speed shop told me about him
I rebuilt a C4 myself about 5 years ago with the help of Jay at Broader Performance trans.
He talked to me on the phone a couple times to walk me past a few questions and sold me a 500 HP rebuild kit for $375.
I didn't have to buy any special tools but had to get creative for the drums.

Yes, you can make a clutch spring compressor from a few of peices of flat bar, two nuts, and a threaded rod.
I can't post pictures because I am out of town on a borrowed computer but if you want plans for that tool I can send them once I get home on friday.

My dad, who is finally back in town want s to do the re-build kit route.
Part of me wants to just put the money towards a 302 with a tranny, because eventually that's what i want.

    Choises choises...
