Rear brake drums for the 74(?) model year are about double the cost of the previous years, what changed?
74-77 went to a wider 10" drum then earlier models --- 10 x 2 1/2 Early 10" brakes used a 1 3/4" or 2" wide shoe Correct part number for a 74-77 Maverick / Comet is a D4DZ-1126-A and can be found on other models that used a 10 x 2 1/2 -- Cougar, Montego, Torino, Ranchero Oddly enough, not the Mustang II or Granada / Monarch I think the axle hub hole is bigger in the later years too. Gotta love Ford and their endless engineering changes!
Well, like Johnny Depp I'll strike my colors here. I'm looking to put a Maverick rearend to use under a 40 Ford, replacing a 10 bolt GM. FWIW the 5 lug rearend is a perfect center of wheel wells fit. I have an indeterminate year 5 lug housing coming minus center section/drums, I suspect the 1 3/4 - 2" shoes will be adequate behind the large Mustang II front discs, 2 1/2" would be a plus. I will check the axle hub diameter. ebay seller tj1141 sells an 8" all new internals trac lock for $800, any experience with him or a cheaper source? Sorry to be siphoning your collective supply of used parts, I also have an orphaned Pontiac and feel your pain. Thanks for the info!
do a search on the explorer rear disc conversion. sounds like you have the skill set to do that and it will eliminate the worry of getting the drums as well as improve your braking. heck you may even find a good mav rear end at the yards....
No worries, I've probably sold 20 Maverick rear ends over the years and most of them went to hot rod guys. The Maverick is one sought after rear for a street rod, that is for sure. :Handshake
Ironically the problem I'm facing is the stock 40 frame striking the S-10 calipers well before the end of the spring travel in addition to only 54.5" between rim mount surfaces requiring wheel spacers and 3" back space rims. Drums should allow me to lower it a few inches. This is my first venture into street rodding and let me tell ya it's a whole lot different from an SAE engineered car!
