My understanding was that 302= 28oz flywheel and 5.0= 52 oz flywheel. I believe that goes along with fords official change. In 1982 if I'm thinking correctly, havn't had any caffine yet.

I look at it this way.................

85 and older 302 (carb motor, flat tappet cam)

86 and up mustang and I believe some Mark VIII's in that era motors 5.0 HO motor (roller cam, fuel injected)

86 up to early 90's IIRC truck and large car motors 5.0 non-HO (meaning roller "ready" block)

If I'm unsure I just pop lower intake off and see if its a roller cam block, or roller cam ready block.

I had a 79 mustang that had 5.0 on the side and 5.0 4v on the air cleaner from factory. All in a nut shell you could say they started Using 5.0L about the same time they started using metric size bolts.

The first official use of 5.0 badges came on the 1978 king cobra mustang.

thanks for all the info guys but either way i will do something with it heck its free i have a new 513 cam i could put in it if its a flat tappet cam and make a good thumper out of it but i would have to run a big stall.or if its roller ready i will just build me another roller motor like the one i have in the mav.its always nice to have a spare.

Don't remember exactly but my 76 Mustang Cobra was a 302 with no referance to 5.0 anywhere. I think 82was the big year for 5.0 to take over :boxing: and 302 drastically started down the slippery slope to the dept of indentification obsolesence.
