Hi guys .. just put on my Edelbrock highrise intake and 4 barrel carb this weekend, much faster! I have a 289 with electronic ignition system, problem is I am getting no spark. The coil was tested fine, it seems to be intermittent as it works off and on. Any ideas, please help as it is sitting in the garage now? Also I am wondering if anyone can help provide me with some timing information for it?
Timing Etc. Need to know what ignition you are running, Duraspark, MSD? Sounds like maybe the module or even a wiring problem. Timing would depend on many factors such as cam and the like. Start at 6btdc and drive it, move up a couple deg at a time and test drive for performance. The old backyard way is to advance the distributor until the engine cranks hard and then back it off a little until it starts easy. This is all ball park ways and the real test is to take it to the strip or timed distance and adjust for optimum speed and et's without detonation etc. Total advance is another part of the process but for now get the basic timing set.
There's not a whole lot of things that can cause no spark: #1 Bad coil, probably the most common. How was the coil tested? Coils can be ohmed out, but that doesn't always guarantee they're good (usually a good indication that they are though). But don't count it out if all else fails. #2 Ignition module...if you have a duraspark module, take it to a local parts store and they should be able to test it for free and tell you definitely whether it's good or bad. #3 Pickup coil....in the distributor. Haven't seen one "go out" on a ford, but it's possible! #4 Coil to distributor wire...hey, it's possible...ohm it out! Hope you get it figured out!
Okay guys, put a new magnetic pickup coil in tonight, still does not work. The coil tests fine, swapped out the electronic ignition box with another one still didn't work, coil wire is fine. This seemed to be intermittent as it did work then not then worked again and now it hasn't worked. I have checked all the wiring I can and everything seems good. I am totally stumped any other ideas guys?
Check the red and white wires that come from the module and go to the fire wall to see if there getting power. the red should get power in the start position of the ignition key. The white should have power in the run position of the ignition key. If they have power and the coil, module and coil wire is good. than I beleive there is one thing left... the distributor. I just bought a new one today for my car, It ran me 45 bucks. Hope this gets ya on the road! Anyone esle have other ideas? Mark
Ok thanks I will be testing that out. I heard the distributor for these cars is more money because it is originally a "points" setup that is now changed to electronic ignition. I don't know .. will try testing those wires thanks for the info. I may just have to take it to a shop for a diagnosis after that
nope! Mine to was originally points that i converted to electronic (duraspark ll ) The dist. you need...if thats the case... would be the same as mine! I do have a spare that would work on your car. Let me know if ya think you might want it! mark
