i have a 71 maverick just got done doing a motor swap....200 cyl for a 5.0 out of a 98 ford explorer..gt40p heads ....hedman longtube headers.....95 mustang gt cam...flat top pistons...pro comp dual plane intake ..600 holley 4 bbl vac secondaries ...double roller......using elec ign from 85 mustang dist spark box etc.....car fires up idles perfect but when i pull positive terminal off car dies....so heres the problem....just went to the auto parts store alt tested perfect its putting out 13-14 volts.also brand regualtor is on it....and its grounded through mounting screw i tested it......i can not figure out the wiring harness needed for this .....can anyone help?
Some one correct me if I'm wrong here but I think I notice a problem............. Isn't the 85 ignition system the old 302 firing order, while the 95 cam is the 351 firing order? Also did you change disty gears?
85 was first year of the roller so the gears are correct from cardone........ive had the car down the road already when the battery was brand new ....car flys and ran smooth....so fire order has to be correct.....i took it down the road after i fixed the power steering hose the other day and it died ....had alt tested and it was throwing out 9 volts....got a new one and new regulator and harness wired everything back up and then it wont run without battery being hooked up......
Don't mean to get you more off topic, but do you realize how difficult it is going to be to access spark plugs on those heads with those headers? Keep the stock exhaust manifolds and see if you can get them to fit in the engine bay. Otherwise, you will not be able to access the 4 of those plugs without removing the headers, and most likely taking the engine off it's mounts and lifting it several inches. Just from past experience... Find some GT40 non-P heads if you can. Or even e7 heads.
the 302/5.0 HO are 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. these were in mustangs,Mark VII Lincolns, and some T-birds and Cougars. All Explorer 5.0L engines are 5.0L HO. these were used from 1983-1995. the 302/5.0 fullsize is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. these were in the Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis from 1982-1991 the 302 truck is the same as the fullsize These are all based on the STOCK production cams in the motors.
plug access is a b*^^&% but i had my neighboor modify the headers so i can get at them.....only 1 plug give me a problem number 7 i believe....but if i take the header bolts out and jus move them a little bit i can get it out.....its not to badd
How did neighbor "modify" the headers? How big was that hammer? Actually, I would like to see pics. I loved the performance of my P heads, but gave them away and got GT40 non-P heads just because of the plug access issue.
ill try to get some pics soon as he comes back from vacation its in his garage .....hes putting rear quaters on it for me and getting it ready for paint.....what kind of horse power u think ill see with this setup?
What is the voltage at the battery when it is running? If the voltage is 12.7ish or better at idle and to 14.7 with a little rpm you should be good! I wouldn't recommend disconnecting the battery cable from the engine when the car is running..could do some damage to the alt.
Need to install my 87 %.0L Ho with GT40p Heads. I need pictures of the header adjustment, too. Rick Texas.
Disconnecting the battery terminal with the car running is going to do bad things to your charging system!!! Does the car run fine/charge fine with the cable connected??? If so leave it alone,theres nothing wrong with it. Car dies because you kill power to the ingnition module when you pull the cable. Old cars with points didnt require lots of voltage to operate so they would stay running when you pulled the cable (and kill the alt/reg) Electronic ignitions require more voltage to operate.Especially ford systems.They are not very tolerant of low voltage situations.Test your charging system with a volt meter and proper proceedure. Only caveman pull cable to do test now a days...Ugh...Good luck man!!!
