Okay, master cylinder changed, alternator issue fixed, all belts replaced and oil changed. Next step - EMISSIONS TESTING. I need all the help, prayers, well wishes, sacrifices, whatever so she will pass. She runs great, she isn't misfiring or anything, no black smoke out the back, etc. I can't think of any reason she won't pass, but I am still so scared of that little tail pipe test. Tennessee won't even let me transfer the title to my name until I register the car with my County Clerk. My county clerk won't let me register it until she passes emmission. Worse case senario, we just sell the car to my Mother-in-law for $1 and have her title it in East Tennessee where there is no emission testing requirements.
good luck if you have any problems getting it to pass there are some tricks you can try just let us know and we can help you out by giving you some tips.
Good luck. Be sure to have the car warmed up drive it for at least half an hour before you take it in.
WOW, I was going to say. I have an Uncle that lives in Tenn. and where ever it was that he lived down there you didn't hardly have to do anything to tag/title/register a car. When he first moved down there he actually had bought his property but was still living in Maryland and actually titled an old jalopy of a 68 stang and got Tenn. Tags for it and put it on the road up here for prolly a year before moving to Tenn, and he never even had to take the car down there to get the tags. No Safety inspection, no emmission or nothing. But that has been a few years back and I don't know for sure what part of Tenn. he was in back then. I want to say soemthing like Monterey or soemthign like that. I guess the times are a changing.
Wow, even up here in the "Super Strict Country Of Canada", we don't even have emission testing on anything older than 1987.......
We don't have emiisions testing in the Az. county I live in but we bought a 73 Comet off of ebay. When we went to get plates they told us they could transfer the title but no plates because it was in the computer as having failed emissions in the county it came from. We waited for over a year and then went to another DMV station that is usually a little more lax. They gave me the plates right away.
Actually the requirements are set by each County. Most of the counties, including Putnam county (where Monterey is) require no inspection or emissions testing. Davidson County (aka Nashville) and the surrounding counties require emissions testing. It cost about $35 to register a car in most counties, but when emission testing and air quality tax hits in the counties that require emission, then the cost goes up to near $100 a year. I remember when I moved to middle Tn 18 years ago, I like to keeled over when they told me it would be $70 to register my car. The previous year in Knoxville it had be $19. Thanks for the Warm engine tip. We will definitely do that. Got school tonight, plan on taking her tomorrow to a try out. Of course if I had found a '74 or older, this would be a moot point as cars made before 1975 are exempt from the test (but not the tax)
Yeah Paintank, we don't have to do anything for our cars except pay for a new license plate sticker every year. Its nice. And also in NC the only vehicles that need emissions are '96-up because they have OBDII.
We failed - barely. HC has to be under 500, ours was 550. The attendant indicated it would probably go down if we changed the oil, but the oil was changed Monday. Hubby thinks Matt may have flooded the engine a little bit and they put premium unleaded in the tank so that increased the HC too. Don't want to wait until he burns out an entire tank of gas. (I told him to only put 5 gallons in ) I have heard that disconnecting the vaccum hose will help too. Any suggestions.
How much does a Retest cost you? I would be willing to pay for the retest if this fails, I just want to try it and I'm not due for emmisions for another six months. Some guys on are local board are planning on trying it, but there not due for a few more weeks to try it. Something to think about if your feeling expirimental http://video.godlikeproductions.com...on_for_the_Environment?id=ebcee2a7b417ad9beed Other than that go through your vacuum lines and fix any broken ones, also go through your ignition system and reset base timing verify balancer not spun before. More than likely a couple repairs to vaccum lines and resetting timing should do it.
My fix was simple after replacing some stuff I probably didn’t need to but it didn’t hurt to do just before I drove down to Jiffy Lube, I started making sure vacuum hoses and bolts around the manifold and carb were tight and damn two of the bolts on carb weren’t tight. It passed and I was so happy it was nothing serious.
