i need help guys ,im trying to get my 70 mav put together ,1st of all i used the late model starter .i have it wired the same way i saw it in the tech article on here ,4 guage wire to the switch side of firewall solenoid and the 12 guage wire to the ignition side ,now with that said i have just mounted the battery in the trunk and grounded it by attaching the ground wire to one of the bolts that hold the trunk latch in place.i was thinking this was a good ground .im not good at wiring so i might have something hooked up wrong somewhere on the solenoid.so can someone help me find my problem??LOL LOL is there any wires other than the small starter wire that needs to to be attached to the ignition side ,right now there is nothing else .When i hit the key switch it just clicks and gets really hot with smoke

you are going to need a much better ground. it should be run to a structural piece and then a ground cable from the engine block to an additional structural piece. all grounds should be mounted on clean metal (no paint or dirt) then painted over or a thin cote of grease to seal.

the big lug on the stater needs to come directly from the battery. 4 gage is to small for having the battery in the trunk, but i should at least crank. the stock solinoid should have the battery power to left side big post. then the right big post should goto the small prong on the starter. the stock wire from the ignition swith needs to goto the I post on the solinoid. you need to have a good ground cable going from the block to the frame with the paint removed from the contact surfaces. need to make sure the paint is removed from where the rear ground cable connects to the body. if its all wired right then you should pull the starter and take it to a parts store and have it tested.

ok here we go. i have the 2 guage cable running from the trunk battery connected to the switched side of the solenoid which is the left prong closest to the front of the car ,now the 4 guage wire is also connected here ruuning down to the big prong connection on the starter ,and the 1 guage wire is connected on the I side of the solenoid and runs to the small prong of the starter, now you said the switch wir needed to be movd to the I side but when i do that thee sint any power at all when i turn the key switch so i put it bac to the s side ,im a littel confussed now ,probably confussing you also
