I own a 73 mercury comet, it's my first car and i am trying to figure out what i can do to fix it up. There is light rust on most of the car with some medium to heavy rust in some spots, the engine starts easily but has something wrong with the transmission(i dont have reverse?) it's the v6 model and i want to upgrade to a v8 anyways, i have my eyes set on a 351w out of an old t-bird for less that $200(everything included). other than that my dad drives an old Lincoln town car with a 302 in it. I know that the other model of comet came with a 302 but am interested in the extra performance that comes with the 351w. if you have any information about swapping the v6 to the 302 or the v6 to the 351w(parts needed, interchangeable parts, work needed etc.). I really like this car and am looking forward to the calluses on my hands and the dent in my wallet that i will get after fixing it up. any advice is welcome and appreciated
The 302 or 351w both take the same motor mounts and frame mounts. The headers are differentfor both engines. If you do not shave the shock towers for the 351w you'll really have a hard time changing the spark plugs. I prefer the 302 and if you want a little more oomph, use a stroker kit to get a 331 or a 347.
will a 302 out of an 87 Lincoln town car work? The motor isnt in the best shape but is very considerable. Where would be some other places i could look for a good engine(crate or otherwise). as for the v6 as soon as a get a camera near me i will upload some photos for you. it has 143 thousand miles on it and just recently had a tune up before i bought it. the only problem i have seen in it so far is a problem with the transmission
