hello, I'm doing the 2bbl conversion on my 77 Maverick with a 250 six. The carb studs are to long on the EGR plate. The studs are hitting the adapter, with about a 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch left between the EGR plate and the adapter. I tried to take off the stud with the nut but no go...What can I do? Thanks in advance. Jason
Candle wax & a torch. Heat the stud till its red, touch the candle to it. Let it cool and back it out with double nuts or vicegrips. Works like a charm.
Will, I haven't heard of anyone using that trick for years. My dad was a boilersmith at the Security Mutual Life Insurance Co. building in Binghamton NY and he did that to remove boiler bolts that had siezed themselves into the boiler plates. It really works slick. I keep a brick or two of Parafin wax in the tool boxes and in my work truck.
Are you clear on what they're talking about when they say double nut? If you run a second nut down onto the stud and butt it up to the original nut, it will act like a stop (jam nut) and force the stud to turn like a bolt rather than just the nut. Some may not be clear on that if they've never seen it done...
If your studs are just barely too long, you can trim them off with an angle grinder with a thin cut wheel. Works great and is quick! Just make sure you'll have enough thread to tighten down your adapter. Stuff a rag in the intake port to keep dirt and crap out while you do it.
If your gonna cut the studs down...Run a nut down on em first(below the level you are cutting at) cut the stud then remove the nut,This will chase the threads/burrs at the end of the stud so you can put a nut back on em to tighten down.
