Okay, well, I'm assuming the vehicle is original, and the paint is new; but is this an original paint scheme/decals? Are the rims original? (not sure if you can tell) I'm thinking about checking it out, but just wanted a few opinions from the masters since I don't know that much about the Mercs. This is as close as I've been thus far.
I don't think the rims are original but the rest of the car is. Looks like it is in great shape. Is that a used car lot? How much are the asking for it?
Yup, used car lot. Asking $5,500. I can't tell you anything about the interior, engine or mileage though. I'd like to check it out but should I be shocked at the $5,500 tag? Seems sort of high? -A
Well .. if the inside and engine compartment are as clean as the outside I would say it is probably worth it ... Plus used car dealers like to negotiate. He probably suckered some poor old lady on a trade-in and gave her $500 for it ...
Paint does not appear to be original, the hood should have a blacked out stripe surrounding the scoop. It looks good from here, but the stripes look off in a couple of ways. Perhaps someone painted them back on, I can't tell. Wheels are definitely not original. Interior does not look white? Is it red or black? I am a little surprised if it's black with the white vinyl top. It seems to have all the original equipment except for the wheels and what seems to be aftermarket mud flaps on the rear. Price: if it's an original V8 car, It may be worth $5,500. Mine was $1,100 20 yrs. ago, 1 yr. newer than that, about the same condition seemingly- not needing paint or work. Sounds reasonable to me. FYI ... If it has been repainted it may be hard to verify if is an actual GT without some documentation. Hard to tell from the pics whether those are the correct seats or not but all Comet GT's did come with buckets. If the salesman has no proof this is an actual GT or a GT Clone that would be a good bargaining point to get the price down if you really want the car.
The stripes don't look right to me either. Shouldn't they say Comet GT on the fenders? And the hood should be blacked out around the scoop. I would say the car has definately been repainted. I would be sure to inquire from the salesman if he can prove that is an original GT by way of any documentation he can provide and take it from there.
Here is a 73 Pic ... The stripe shouldn't widen on the rear quarter panel like the one for sale ... http://www.geocities.com/cping3/73Grabber.html
Stripes The stripes do get a little wider in the rear. Jean-the '71 & '72 has 'COMET GT' on the front fenders. The '73-'75 has it on the rear quarter. It just didn't look right in the photo. Looks authentic in the photo. Seth
Thanks guys. A bit more info: The interior is indeed black. "Comet GT" appears on the rear quarter panels in white. Its just a very, very basic block typeface though - looks almost too plain. Which is why I wasn't sure it was authentic. It's a '73. So the GT had the V8 and the 6cyl was standard? Great assessment everyone. This definitely helps. -A
The link above has the correct lettering type. Seth would know for sure but they should be outlined letters ...
Stripes Ther are block style letters. The year that you are looking at has I believe 2(memory) outline stripes surrounding the broad stripe in the center. They should be tape stripes. It is just a little unusual to me to see white stripes, white vinyl top and black interior. Generally the interior matches the color of the stripes, or, is body colored. I would not have been surprised to see red interior. I see no reason for this to not be an authentic GT. The seats should be high back non-reclining buckets with roll & pleated inserts in the centers. The six was probably about as common as the V8 or even less common in my experience. The shifter could be floor mounted or column. On the floor seems to be most common. I would guess that it is an A/T in the floor-more common. Snatch it up, there aren't many around. I broke down and called. 302 V8 w/ 3 on the floor (been redone) Clean engine. 108k miles Original BEIGE interior (man those shadows are tricky) Bucket seats Painted in late 80's & will need repainted or touched up $5,500 and won't budge. Dealer is a nice guy (small shop). Owner of the Comet was his uncle. The car next to it (in the photo) is a Fairlane wagon which I thought was pretty rare in itself. -A
The yellow Comet is a 73 GT. You can see how the factory stripes came on the car. This one has the 302, with C-4 floor shift, black interior. Hope this helps. Paid $1200.00 for it about 7 years ago.
