This may sound incredibly stupid but after having a friend take a look at what I thought was a power steering leak he told me that I need a new rack and pinion unit. The thing that he is refering to is the shock like unite that has two hoses and is nearer to the drivers side. My stupid question is, do mavericks have rack and pinion? I have power steering on my mav. This is all so confusing. If I do have a r/p set up where do I find a unit for it, that is just as puzzeling. Thanks

Its not a stupid question your friend is confuessed. You do not have rack and pinion steering. What you saw is called a power cylinder. If that's what is leaking you can get a rebuilt kit from auto crafters. Mavericks come with a simple steering setup nothing fanstey. If you what to see a rack and pinion steering the mustang II has them. I hope this helps. Good luck.

Thanks Mike. This whole part of the mav is a mystery to me. Luckily my guy was able to find a new or newly reconditioned one from our local Lindy's. Now I have to find the hoses that go to it and hope that the power cylinder comes with some bushings. Thanks for your tip. Is this steering set up some sort of compromise between r/p and manual? It seems odd that I would have power steering and not have r/p. Anyway thanks.

Not really r/p came out in some models but not all. r/p is a great way to go if you want better handling on road. Its no compromise ford just designed it to keep it simple. Try auto crafters for the hoses there all complete.
