Has anyone ever been asked this question by an AutoZone manager: Could you use some hand cleaner and paper towels, if I could save you some money on this purchase? I had this question asked to me a couple years ago in New Bern, N.C. when I bought an Msd box and plug wires, and a couple months ago in Jacksonville, N.C. when I bought some a/c components. Now those two times, I was given a 20% discount. So today, I asked the manager today, if I buy some hand cleaner and blue shop towels, could you give me a discount on the MSD coil and plug wires? He replied, "I think I could do a little something for you. He rung it all up ,including the one ($2.19) paper towels and small bottle of fast orange hand cleaner ($1.99), and then discounted the sale 10%. My receipt has "courtesy 10 discount 10%," printed just under the subtotal. On top of that, all three times, they have thrown something else in.Today, he asked do you have a vehicle that is fuel injected? I answered yes, and he gave me two twin packs of STP fuel injector cleaner, in the black bottles, free of charge. Todays savings totaled $13.59+ the free merchandise. It seems that certain words have to be spoken for such a deal to take place. Anyone else have such experiences? Chime in guys, I want to hear what you have to say.

This has happened at two different AZ's in two different towns, and it was managers all three times.

    Az

AZ wanted 149 for an alternator for my 99 v6 stang. Advanced Auto was 109 for the same, plus Advanced Auto had coupon code at check out for $40 off $100+ = I paid $69 plus tax for a rebuilt 3G. Would have got free shippping also, but needed it sooner and I picked it up. I bought an rebuilt alternator for my 05 Focus 2 months ago at AZ and mentioned that that was steep (but I was in a hurry) and the AZ guy never even hinted about a discount. AZ, around here, was great 10 yrs ago on pricing, but lately they're more than A&A (Joe Amatto, drag racer) or NAPA. It seems that when AZ first showed up, in North East PA, they were under cutting the others, but now you really have to beg for the deals.

Here in Culver City Los Angeles.. I do remember, now that I think back, that AZ was pushing the injector cleaner at the checkout counter. And they asked If I needed any other Items, and the blue towels were right there.. That was my oportunity I guess.
The AZ's in Los Angeles are all run by barely English speaking Hispanics. 1st generation immigrants with very little knowledge about cars. They crank mexican rap music over the PA. I speak Spanish, doesn't help. We invaded their land dont ya see..No dicsuenta por el Gringo..Reconquistadores

Being an Autozone manager, I agree with most of this... When I call around for a parts lookup for customers, there have been many instances where the other end was answered in Spanish. I've explained to many of my Mexican/Hispanic/whatever they wanna be called that it's rather unprofessional to answer a phone in Spanish in a predominantly English speaking country(there was a vote near the birth of the US that determined English as the language of the country) and am met with nothing but hostility. My mother was born in Mexico, emigrated to a better country(this one) and my father was born here but his parents are from Mexico. I consider myself American, not Mexican, not "Mexican American"(I don't have dual citizenship, obviously.) If one is so in love with their country of origin and disgusted with the country that has given them a home, a job, put clothes on their back and food in theit mouth then they should go back to it. We don't need any of that unpatriotic crap here.

LOL Its mainly a way to either get you coming back or to push our "checkout challenge" items. The district manager is always hounding us to get the item sold(usually a fuel injector cleaner, flashlight, or other random item.) Its looked down upon in the company though, as it contributes to shrink.

I have managed both a Autozone and Checker (schucks/Kragen) store. And getting free injector cleaner or the kragen cashier using their discount card on your purchases are both good ways for you to not see that counter person anymore. Both are fireable offenses. Now Autozone does have a 10% discount code in the registers. we used it for our regular customers that weren't commercial customers. If you are in the store often enough ask for it and if you deal with the same person most of the time it will make it easier.

I can relate to all you said for it is the same way in alot of the North Carolina stores. I will say though O-Reily auto parts is my favorite. I have been in alot all over the south and not seen that issue. We are getting our first here in jacksonville and can't wait. They are american made and bread. They are also alot cheaper on pricing.
