OK I bought a Maverick that was suppose to have all the proper State of Illinois paperwork but was not in the sellers name, but the seller is a good Joe, trusted name in the community and leaving titles open is a common practice in the auto hobbie. Turns out the car has changed hands 4 times w/o being transfered and now I am trying to get it done. The guy on the title who technically still owns it I can't find even with the internet and DMV won't let me know any info on him either, not even with a FOIA request. So is anyone around here familiar with Illinois know about anything I can do with this car now? I have asked DMV but to be honest I have gotten 3 different answers from them. In some states race cars don't need titles or VINs only bills of sale. It's gonna suck if I can't do anything with this car.

    Thanks for any help

PS anyone know a Mark L. Holmes who lives/lived in Sawyerville IL? :burnout:

when I have had that problem I took the paperwork dmv gave me and went home. Then I ""found;)"" the owner a few days later and had him sign the paperwork for me. ""find"" the guy at your own risk, but thats what I have done when I hit a wall trying to find somebody.

they don't help much anymore . in the last few years it has become very difficult to get titles fixed that have your type of problem .
my wife is a notary so if you send it to me (the title) I can fix it for you

The problem complicating this is that an Investigator from the State Police knows about the car and problem I have. Ironically he probably can find out exactly where this guy is (if he doesn't already know) but can't tell me. So if this guy is "found" as one poster put it Investigator Wilson will probably know how I "found" him and that would not be good. I have been told about Broadway title and might try them but don't undersatnd how they can help unlees they find this guy too.

If it were in AZ I would say get a bonded title. But I don't know anything about IL laws.

I have had that happen a few times and I always seemed to find that person right away.

Another option, if you are not in any hurry, would be to give the title to a distant good friend or relative with more desirable DMV laws in their state. Once they get the clean title in the mail, transfer it back to you in your state. Only catches would be that you better trust that person and the 2x transfer cost could bite you. Just do your research first.

    Good luck!

No doubt bonded titles kick azz for these problems. IL doesn't have them and thats BS. For all the crap AZ DMV takes they are auto hobbiest friendly for sure. Some times I wish I had never moved from there. It would be allot easier if the investigator didn't know about it. Wish I didn't have it outside the day my neighbor got ratted out. A buddy of mine in AZ could get me a bonded title for it, but I'd have to get it there for the inspection and that would be cost prohibative.

Looks like you need an AZ buddy to get the title and a really good buddy with an AZ Inspection Station.

Yep thought of that, but 1) most states require an in person physical inspection for stuff coming in the state and 2) the IL State DMV Investigator knows the car is here. I'm stuck with one of two options find the guy who sold the car to first guy that didn't transfer the title or call DMV and have them pick it up as an abandonded vehicle and eat the $ I paid for it. I guarantee there won't be much to pick up though.

I know open titles are a common thing with car hobbiests but guys if you live in a state like IL please transfer titles. Then some poor sap like me who is familliar with another states DMV laws won't get boned. Some states that require a notary of the seller's signature (like AZ) aren't a problem. The notary is the proof and anyone who holds the title from that point is the rightful owner tranfered or not. It would be nice if all states got on board with this.

    Thats a big 10-4 :thumbs2:

AZ Inspections are done at the DMV and they are very thorough. They even scratched powder coating of the frame of my 65 F100 to get a better look at the vin# when I moved back there from California. I wanted to go off on the guy big time but needed the inspection so sucked it up. I did register a complaint once I got the AZ title for it but they did nothing, oh well. If the inspection stations were private I'm sure getting it done would be easy for the right money.

Yeah unfortunately this isn't going to happen:cry:

    LIke stated above.......
Only way around this is to "find" the guy, should not be that hard. He just needs to sign the title. Maybe you might even find the old crumpled up piece of notebook paper for the "receipt" with dirt all over it in the trunk of the car. And amazingly his signature matches that one as well.

Keep looking you can probably find him by dinner time without to much trouble.:thumbs2:

I remember in high school my "mother" would right me notes all the time, even though she was out of town for weeks on end. When my mother finally did right me a note the secretaries had to call her cause it didn't match her writing on ANY of "her" other notes. LOL:rofl2:

I would park the car at a friends house for a month or so, take care of paperwork. If this officer even cares, by the time you have the paperwork figured out I DOUBT he will even give a crap anymore.
