Was it running before carb swap?
Make sure gas is getting to carb, check floats for gas, when you open throttle does gas shoot out squirters?
    Is there gas in tank?

the engine was a fuel injected engine converted to a carb set-up. I nevr heard it run i just had alot of trust in the guy i purchased it from.I have not gotten the gas up to the carb yet ,the fuel line is connected with a see thru filter and the tank was really really low of gas and i pure somein the tank but not a whole lot maybe 2 gallons .i have ben poring some from the can straight threw the carb .NOw i know it wont run long like that it just seemed reall short and fast start and go dead ,it my need more gas in the tank to prime it up? so what do ya think ?suggestions welcome and appreciated

If it was a fuel injected motor before then did you put on a mechanical pump or an electric? If you swapped timing covers and used a mechanical pump then did you install a fuel pump eccentric on the front of the cam timing gear?

The diaphragm goes bad in a fuel pumps if sitting. Never trust a junkyard fuel pump.

I agree GET A NEW PUMP and go from there. Fuel pumps not that expensive.

How long does the engine run when you get it started?
If you are just pouring fuel down the throat of the carb try putting it down the vent tubes that stick up at the front and back of the air horn - that will fill the carb and give you a couple of minutes of run time to help get fuel to the pump and then to the carb.

Definately agree sounds like fuel pump cuprit, though i found that also having a dry-rotted rubber line doesn't help matters, tends to want to pump air instead of fuel, but i've heard that mech fuel pumps that are aged, tend to bite the dust when they've been turned over dry with no fuel? Oreilley had my pump for right at 30 bucks if i remember right, easy swap once you move the P/S pump out of the way (if applicable) while you are at it, i'd go ahead and just replace the couple bucks worth of rubber line if that's what you are running from top of pump to carb line, sometimes the inner walls of the rubber lines from dry-rot can break away and clog up... are you getting fuel in your see-through filter? If not, definately sounds like a pump.

How old is the rubber line coming from the tank to the metal line,at the frame rail?Alot of times they get weak, thru the years and will actually collapse in on itself, cutting off fuel flow.Just something else to look for.

could collapse, or sometimes dry rot and have a hole, causing your fuel pump to suck in tons of air instead of picking fuel up from the tank... can also as stated earlier, have inner break away and jam causing blockage preventing fuel from being delivered.

Pipman, before you take the pump off,get a good pc.of hose long enough to go from the pump,to a gallon gas can,and see if it will pull fuel.If it does, just replace the line from the tank.If it doesn't pull,it's the pump.:tiphat:
