as some of u might or might not know i was having holley carb problems ,i replaced it with a good one today ,the problem i have now is when i hit the ignition switch it will fire up and run and as soon as i let off of the switch it goes dead if i hold the switch on it will run until i let off of it ,some say the ignition switch might be bad ,it has a new key switch which was replaced when i 1st got this project ,this car has never been driven since ive had it ,it seems every time i solve one problem another comes in to play

Sounds like maybe a wire is crossed on the starter,or the selonoid

when i replaced the key switch i wonder if i had gotten the rod out of adjustment ,ya know the one that runs to the switch itself,
i also undid some of the wires coming out of the fire wall to seee if i had used the right hotwire for my coil but the one i used has power with the switch on and none with it off so i thought that should be ok,but when i was preeling off the electrical tape i noticed one of the wires had been how and melted at one time ,so is this a indication that the switch needs replacing .i just so happened to land one from ebay earlier this year becasue i had heard the 70 maverick ignition switch was not avaliable anymore !!

the switch could be out of adjustment. there are slots on the mounting holes of the switch for adjustment.
you may have the wrong wires going to the coil. when your cranking power is sent to the coil from the starter solinoind to bypass the resistor wire.

I am having a similar problem an I have fund that the brown wire on the solenoid is the ignition and runs to the + on the coil. Part way t the coil it T's off to a red wire with a green stripe that runs to the plugs on the outside firewall, inside it turns pink and runs to the ign switch. I cant find anywhere else the coil gets power.

My brown wire only reads 3 volts with the key on and my ign wont run with that. I cant tell if the red/green wire or the brown is a resistor wire but I need 12 volts.

now that I think about it I am using a 70 wiring diagram and I have a 69.5, is the wiring the same?

Points need a resistor wire, aftermarket ignitions don't. In your pic it looks like a red cap on the distributor,(MSD?) If you need full 12v, you will have to re-run the ign wire, or bypass the resistor section.

If your switch is on the column then adjust the switch - you will find it near the bottom of your steering column.
You should have battery voltage at the "I" terminal on the solenoid with the key in the "ON" position. Use that to adjust the switch.
If that doesn't work then you can replace it.

I wud check and/or change the thermostat b4 I got into the rest of the cooling sys. I wud go thermostat, flush engine block, have rad. chk if I were not going to get a new unit. As far as the heater leaking, I wud get a new core - wud'nt screw around with a repair on the 40 yr old unit.
