i got my maverick running today ,i decided to pu antifreeze and water in it so i could listen to it run longer.after a few minutes the temp gauge steadily got higher to the point i had to shut it off and the radiator was steaming ,also my heater started leaking in the floor pan ,i heard this was a common thing to happen with a blown head gasket.i got this engine used so i never heard it run until now, runs good no exhaust smoke .im hoping its a bad radiator i have a 200 I-6 radiator ,when it cools down i wanna check for milky stuffin the oil

Rad cap might not be holding pressure.Rad. possibly clogged.Did you "burp" the system, before you put the rad.cap on?

Heaters leaking cause you need a heater core or you have a hose/clamp issue.

You need to verify that you have all the air out of the system. If it continues to fill with air locks you may be into a gasket issue assuming the rest of the cooling system is functioning correctly.

Leaving the cap off til the thermostat opens, and you see the water circulating.Once thats done, cap it.Expells out the trapped air in the system

oh ok now i get what ya said..lol i should have been a blonde i think sometimes.....yes im pretty sure i got the air out ,doesnt the car have to be cold to check the oil stick for milky substances .the radiator seems to circulate fairly well but with the cap off u can see a mist coming up out.now when i lay on the ground with my hand up to each header collector i dont feel any water or mist.i really wanted a nice aluminum radiator anyways just didnt wanna get one just yet .i would lik to know for sure i dont have a blown head gasket

make sure your t-stat is opening too. If your heater core was good befor maybe it leaks now because your t-stat didnt open and built up too much pressure in the cooling system and the heater core was close to leaking already and the extra pressure helped put it over the edge. Withthe cap off and the engine warmed up you should see a cycle of off and on water flowing into the top of the radiator.

For now bypass the heater core. Make sure you have a good cap and try it again. With the leaking heater core it might not have held enough pressure to keep it from boiling, depends on how bad it was leaking though. You can check the oil for milky stuff at any time, don't need to wait for it to cool off.

What kind of fan are you running? Manual or electric? Do you have a shroud? Is the rad clean inside and how are the fins on the outside? Can the fan pull air through it easy?
I ran my 302 on a 200 6 cyl rad when I first put it together. It ran a few degrees warm, but not enough to hurt it. That was with a small electric fan with a small shroud. I have since switched to a new 302 heavy duty cooling rad, manual fan, no shroud, and it never gets over 190 degrees.
