The mav is gone but i'm still here!
My chilton's manual says 20pints(total capacity)

    so that's 9.4 liters.

kind of use the search button, but really couldnt find an answer. Installed new gasket trans pan and was fixing to buy more dexron/mercon.

(this is what the guy told me to add when i bought the car, scince it had a minor trans fluid leak)

Now i find out should been using type F all this time? or is it still safe to use dex/merc still?

Type F fluid only. If you are draining the transmission, cooler and converter it will take between 10 and 12 quarts - if you are just draining the transmission it will only take 3-5 quarts.
The only way to be sure it is full is to check the fluid level with the engine idling in Park. Run it through all the gears and then recheck. The level "cold" should be half way between the ADD and FULL marks on the dipstick. When it is at "normal operating temperature" it should be about 3/4 between the ADD and FULL marks. When it is hot (after pulling a long steep hill) it should be at the FULL mark.
Under no conditions should the C4 be above the FULL mark on the stick - it will purge fluid when it gets warm and it will foam if it is over full.
