ok the other day my stock 302 was running fine timeing was a little off but it was running pretty solid other then that. The next day i start it up and it idles fine for about 10 seconds and then the whole car starts shaking and dies. same thing every time i try and start it. well after the car is warmed up it all of the sudden starts running fine again. then the next day i go to start it and it starts acting like crap again. A friend of mine suggested it might be a fouled plug so I changed the spark plugs today and once again it ran good for about 10 seconds started running rreeaallyy bad and then died. Im still learning about cars does anyone have any idea what it could be?
Sounds like you may have a choke pull off prob. which is not opening the choke when first started but after you have started it a few times and keep it running then the choke coil is opening it up and then it will run ok !
yeah i thought that too, but even when the car is warmed up it seems to run that way.. would that be because its not completely warmed up?
yeah i am running points you think they could be bad? i replaced them about 5 months ago and i havent been driving it to much because its still a work in progress. could it just be a bad spark in that? like could i just file them a little bit and yeah its been pretty cold the time it started acting up
I would sugest rechecking the point setting and making sure that the screws holding down the points and condenser are tight. I had a loose condenser on a car one time and the ran real erratic. How long has it been since you changed the fuel filter and the air filter? Always worth a check. I was once told to always start with the easy things first. Good luck.
My first thought: Crap in the carb... Second, fuel filter. Crap in the carb will fall away from passages when the car is not running, then (in a few seconds) be sucked into blocking passages when you start the engine.
i was told to always start with the free stuff and the air filter is brand new and the fuel filter is one of those old glass ones that you can take apart and clean. so far most od the people im asking are saying its probly the carb so i guess ill check that next
That's the whole problem with points, every change in weather (humidity, hot, cold, etc) affects the points and how they perform. That's where everyone got the idea Holley carbs somehow needed adjusting for the weather changes. It wasn't the carb,it was the friggin points ignition that screwed with the engine's tune. Want to really f--k with em ? Go to the car wash and steam clean the motor....................... You'll spend the next hour afterwards trying to restart the engine. And then only after removing the distributor cap and completely drying the inside of the distributor. Get rid of the points and 99% of your tuning problems will disappear.
yeah i definetly want to get electronic ignition but i wanted to get it going right before i put more money into itim gonna have someone help me take a look at the carb first is there a filter inside the carb? and if thats clogged would that cause this?
ok so what do you suggest i do? can i just reset the points i have? i dont think its worth getting new ones im planning to get the pertronix ignition in about a week or 2
Carry a can of WD40 and spray it under the cap...then ya can go! Back in the 80's I carried a can of WD with me in my car and as soon as it rained you would see cars after the puddles that people were trying to crank..I would stop pop off the distributor cap on thier car and spray it and away they would go.....made a little cash in the process!
