ok ive finally been driving the car around and it was fine running right around 195 with a 195 stat. today set the timing and drove around for about 15 minutes and the temp was around 225! any ideas on why it would do this? i wouldnt think that would make it run hotter..

Where did you set the timing?
Did you make any other changes?

What was it before? I'd set it back and see if the cures it. Then go from there.

you might want to make sure your balancer isn't spun. use a vacuum gauge and loosen the distributor until you get the highest vacuum reading with both vacuum lines off of the ports and plugged. then recheck and see how far off the mark of 6 deg BTDC you are. If you're way off, the ring on the balancer is probably spun.

If you changed the timing then you have to change the mixture on the carburetor.

should i be running antifreeze/coolant? because i have just straight water in there.. also the radiator is pretty old could some rust or something worked its way in between something and blocked some flow off? is there any way to tell?

Water will cool better than antifreeze but it doesn't have any rust inhibitor like antifreeze. You can back flush the cooling system to see if it helps. If it helps but doesn't cure the problem then have the radiator rodded out at the radiator shop. A blown head gasket will also cause over heating...so will a lean fuel mixture

    Hi.

    I had a overheating problem.

    The solution:

I went with the mechanic and believe it or not.

He bent the fan vanes and now the temperature keeps 190 °F- 200°F.
