I can't make up my mind on a head for my 331. I would like to have a hot street car with a little auto crossing. It's also a 5 Spd. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Are the Vic Jr and the Ford Z304 to big for a street car? EVeryone around here says no, it just depends on the cam.
    1. Edel Vic Jr 210cc runners 2.05 & 1.60 $1400
    2. Ford Racing Z304 204cc runners 2.02 & 1.60 $1300
    3. RHS/Topline 180 cc runners 2.02 & 1.60 $1200
    4. AFR 185 185cc runners 2.02 & 1.60 $1600

I'm also open to used heads that a forum member might want to sell just in case someone has a good set taking up room.

If you go with a head with a 2.02 intake valve size... You will need pistons with valve reliefs to accommodate the valves or, have yourse fly cut if they have enough meat on em.The stock pistons dont have valve reliefs large enough for 2.02 intakes.

Thanks. I do have aftermarket pistons with the valve reliefs but not for the TrickFlow heads.

AFR 185s. That's what I got after much research. AFRs are flat better than most other heads. The only heads that are better are the cnc ported Trick flows and they cost even more and require different pistons.

i ran a set of the protoplines on a 408 I had. they made good power.450hp/475tq to the wheels running 9-1 comp and a 750 holley. That was running very rich. afrs are about the best but go with the protoplines and have 400 left over for some other parts. Research online I think mm&ff done a small block ford head shootout. lots of info

I would look at the Trick Flow Hi-Ports, or the Trick Flow CNC ported Twisted Wedge Heads. Both will make lots of power, and valvetrain pieces are easy to find.

AFR's are good heads, some people love em but I would pass if you plan on upgrading down the road ie: major porting

Z304's Make great power, but there has been inconsistancy in the castings lately, and valvetrain geometry can be a headache.

RHS are ok, I just dont see spending the money for a somewhat stock upgrade. If your gonna spend the dough, get your moneys worth.

Thanks again for the info. I can't find that head shotout on their website. I would love to read it if someone a post a link. I can't believe no one picked the Vic. Jr's. 9 out 10 shops around here says go with them. I'm I reading right when it says the Z304 will fit a 302 or 351 block?

I just moved so the mags are packed away but if I remember correct the 331 with Vic JR. combo made 70 or so more HP than the stock E7 heads did on the 331. The AFRs made 90+ HP more on the same engine.

Vic Jrs are kinda big for a little 331, IMO. You see them mostly on healthy 351s and 351 strokers.

Looks like I will be going with a Dart 195 Pro 1. AFR's are just to much for my budget right now. I did some searching and these are not a bad head, just not common around the Ford racers.

What oil pump is best: stock oil pump, high pressure oil pump, or high volume? I will be using a Moroso 8 qt deep sump pan #20510.
