Hey guys, got some questions. Came accross a 74 Comet GT.. to be honest, I had never heard of one before, but fell in love, what can I say?? I have a few problems though... for one they are asking 2800.00 for it. I thought that the price is a bit hight, but don't know what the average retail on one is. There is some rust..It also has 150,000 miles and hasn't had a rebuild from what I can tell..an the ad said nothing about it. I don't mind doing a rebuild, but for 2800 I think that is a bit steep. Here's the stats on it: Mercury Comet GT. Features the orignial Mercury Mag Wheels (avail for only 2 yrs), along with original stripes, motor and all well, the whole darn car is completely original. Owned and maintained by the same 1 owner since 1976. Estimate 150K on her. She does have a bit of surface rust here and there (see photos below) and there are a couple places near bottom of car that are more than surface however, not rusted through either. No rust spots are very large, or of any real concern. All features function as they should (blinkers, headlights, tail-lights, heater, radio), this car is an antique, and does not have power steering, or any other power option. Motor is the original 302, with a 2bbl carb. My major question is... 1- what price range should I be really looking at. 2- was power steering an option on the comets? 3-what areas should I be looking for for hidden rust 4-any other special things I need to be watching oout for.. I read about the cowl, so will be bringing a bottle of water with me but anyhting else?? Thanks for the info
Sounds like about the going price if the rust isn't too bad. Check the floorboards for rust and the torque boxes also. Usually you can look underneath at the floorboards. Definitely check the cowls. A big plus is the 302. Offer them less and see what they say.
Thanks Don... I figured I would post some pictures so that you and anyone else can get a better look at it. Was power steering an option back then? I didn't know how that played with the value if it was... I don't mind paying the price, BUT didn't want to get taken, seeing as I didn't know the retail value for it.. Nice car, would love to do a restore on it, going to go check it out this afternoon so we will see what happens!
Thats the one Yellow75...didn't know what I was looking at as far as what it was actually worth... what do you think?
The car is a basic good start, I like the fact that it is a 3 speed manual and highback bucket seat car, orange interior is different than normal and can make it more desireable to some people. Just from the pics it looks like you might find floorboards in bad condition. As for the price, well he has had it for sale for awhile if you like what you find I would offer him less like $2,200 and go from there. If it was a 72 or 71 that would be a different story. Good luck and let us know what happens :Handshake
Thanks for the help guys. I was really looking for something different. This will be my first restore so I am ready to go. I have been looking for months now trying to find a good classic car, and my wife loves this car (she says it would be her Valentines Day present ) I was tired of seeing the market flushed with camaros and mustangs and corvettes..don't get me wrong those are nice cars..but everyone has one so when I stumbled across this bad boy.. I was instantly intrigued. The 302 is a great engine, and it's a beautiful car... We will see how this afternoon goes!
Well you are off to a good start if your wife loves the car we will see what she says when you tell her you need a couple more hundred dollars for ? The cars are definetly attract attention and are fun to drive
Also check the trunk drop offs, which some people call quarter drops. From inside the trunk it is the place where the trunk floor drops down to meet the lower part of the 1/4 panel. Can be best inspected from under the car. IMHO, I think the $2800 price is too high, more like $2K
Thanks for the info and the input everyone. My original price that I guessed was 2000 and thought 2800 was high also
I would really be surprised if that car did NOT have power steering. I would think with a V-8 and a 3-speed on the floor, power steering would be a must in my opinion.
