I took it from my '77 Maverick before it went to the junkyard. I think Ford put foot pedals in Mavs starting around '75 or so...
I messed around with relocating the heater controls for much the same reason as you a few years ago. never did anything with it. But in my looking, there are a few different options. The Pinto had a center control panel that used cables (w/o ac) I think. If yours is an original ac car the center controls from a early Granada/Monarch can be modified to work with our housings. Both of those should allow you to use your existing Maverick housing. Vacuum controls/temp cable are ac, Only cable controls were on non-ac cars.(Mav) Some Mustang II stuff might work as well. If you find a dash that you want to use, I would use the matching HVAC system with it just for ease of duct work and controls.
My current stock heater box is a/c so does that mean there's no cables at all? I've only ever got a good look at non a/c ones. So the monarch/granada center controls are compatable with my a/c? that's good. Do I need a specific year or anything? How would it need to be modified? I might end up just fiddling with the stock dash after all.
You'll have to get the vacuum chart for both units to make sure the controls perform the same function on each vacuum motor. I'm going on memory, I'll try and find those charts this week unless someone here has them handy. The temperature controls for ac and non ac cars both use a cable for the blend door. It might have to be modified slightly or vacuum lines switched around or blocked for certain functions. The sweep on the cable is probably different also. These issues can be resolved but you would need to decide if you just want to move the controls and do a console, or do you want to change the entire instrument panel and heater box. If you just want to move the controls, several Ford products all the way through the 90's use vacuum controls, so it could just be a matter of finding one that you like and is compatible.
I'm thinking of doing a console that just continues down to the floor and out a little but under the A/C vent pretty much. I really want to only move the controls and not do anything as drastic as the box I think. I imagine it would be really hard to find one that would fit in easily. Especially with A/C. I hope the Granada one is correct. That would cut down on the scrambling around and searching.
