I just bought a 302 from craigslist with the code D8AE-9425-BA on the intake. I never really seen a 302 out of a car and this kinda looks a little to big to me. Ive been trying to figure out what this engine is and cannot. To me it looks like a 351 or a 400 the transmission is huge and does not look like it will fit in the maverick unless the v8 sits closer to the front. Any help on this would be awesome Thanks!!

Got a pic of the trans? Could be an FMX in that year maybe. WHat did it come out of?

Can you post a photo of the engine/trans?

I'm pretty sure that intake is a 302 2bbl. With a large trans it probably cam out of a midsize/full size car and it not a c4, wont fit in the maverick very well. But pictures will help alot.

Also down by the starter area on the block there are some numbers that will help with identification as well.

I just wouldn't trust going off of intake numbers to popular to switch.

Can you get a 1/2" socket with extension on the lower thermostat housing bolt? IF not it is likely a 302 if so it is likely a 351W. If it came out of a 77-78 LTD or the like it MIGHT be a 251 Cleveland. How many valve cover bolts? Are the fuel pump bolts side by side or up and down?

This is a Cleveland - note the thermostat housing isn't even on the intake. Plus note the 8 studs on the valve cover.

A dang might pretty Cleveland also. Is that yours or a picture he put up I didn't notice? That looks like one bad a$$ cleveland there.
They are a very pretty engine when built up and polished.
I sold a 72 Sportsroof that I had put a mild Windsor in once. He didn't want the Windsor and gave it back too me if I would assemble and install a built Cleveland he had bought. The Windsor would put the Sporstroof in the wind real easily but that Cleveland flat out scared me with a close ratio 4 speed and a 4.11 rear gear. lol

That's my 393 stroker - 10.5 to 1 with closed chamber Boss 351C heads. Wide ratio 4 speed with 3.90 gears in the 9 inch with a trac loc unit.

I think the Sportroof I had, had a wide ratio 4 speed in it. I am not real knowledgeable about them to be honest. I know that when I changed gears it seemed like all I had to do was gain another 200 or so RPM's and it was ready to go to the next gear. I also remember it was the more desirable transmission.
I really wanted to keep that Mustang. Had the NASA hood on it and the
    Mach I stripes on it.

Since the 351W came out in 1969, the earliest code ought to be C9 for a 351 manifold.

351 cleveland was from 1970-74 , 75 to 82 was 351 modified (junk) there was also a 400 m from 71-79, all look similar but cleveland uses a smallblock bellhousing the others use a bigblock bell.:tiphat:

Yup, my Cleveland built in 1972 takes the same bell housing as a 302 :)

400's were produced right up to 82. And there were a select few in the early 70's with a small block bell pattern. One of these just sold on ebaymotors.
