Hi Guys, I'm new to this forum and I have a question. Every Maverick/Comet I have owned and my family has owned has had a "pinging" noise up front everytime you hit a bump. Kinda like the balljoints are loose. This '72 has that same problem. I checked the balljoints and they are tight. Any ideas? On mom's 1977 we ended up putting Granada upper control arms with rubber bushings in and it didn't help. I thought the rubber bushings would provide some insulation to the noise. I checked the balljoints by placing a piece of notched metal under the upper control arm and wedged it on the ledge below the control arm. Tight as a drum. Any ideas would be appreciated. Check the bushings in the frame (under rad support) for the strut rods. Get overlooked a lot and dont last too long in factory trim. Moog sells a nice replacement set. DONT use urethane it will snap the rods in time.
Thanks for your reply, Darren. I don't think I have EVER changed those. All I've ever done to them is adjust the alignment. On that '77, the car didn't start that until about 32000 miles. I'm sure those are gone. Will check that. Thanks. Craig.
Curious about one thing: does the urethane bushings not let the rods move properly? Looks like it would take considerable to "snap" them. Craig.
the urthane makes the strut rod flex more. its even worse if the front end is lowered or the springs are saging. the flex fatigues the strut rod till it snaps.
Well, got those bushings replaced. Noise is gone. Realigned the front end. Caster was WAAAAAY off. Balanced the tires. Drives good. Thanks, guys!
