I remember reading in a thread on economy that the earlier year 200 timing gears had a different firing order or something that made them get higher mpg ratings. Do these gears work on the 250s as well? What years should I look for?

You should throw in a cam while your at it! That's what i'm going to do whenever I get around to replacing the timing set. According to my catalog they dont swap over though, so you would need a 250 chain.

Oh and I dont think it's the firing order, I think the emission models had the cam retarded a degree or two.

The valve timing is different on the pre emission timing gears set...not the ignition timing. The emission timing gears doesn’t start opening the intake valve until the piston is almost half way down on the intake stroke. The pre-emission gear will start drawing the air/fuel mixture earlier. This will increase the bang after the spark plug lights the charge. See: http://www.woodyg.com/fairlane/finfo/CamTiming.html

Yeah, I'm looking into cams for sure.

Good link. I'm definitely interested in more low-end torque. I'd prefer to be able to get out of the way of stuff on the road.
