i prefer manual, i was kinda disappointed when i started working on my maverick(which was sitting in my grandpa's pasture rusting away at the time) snd noticed that it was auto.

When I drive automatics, I have to brake with my left foot so it has something to do - 4 speed all the way :yahoo:

It depends on your preference and if its mostly a street car or a race car...
IMHO... Standard shift gives you more control over the car. Its also a more direct link between you and the car...Its more visceral I guess you could say.
Automatics are better than stick in as much as they shift faster and are more consistent. There are othe r pros/cons to both soo...Its really down to personal preference.

For me, it depends on the driving situation.

In heavy city stop and go traffic or on long trips, the automatic is real nice to have.

In light traffic or back country roads, the manual is fun to play with.

I am also suffering from a lower back injury, bad knees, and a hip that is starting to flatten out. Sometimes only sitting in the seat and not worrying about shifting is a nice choice.

I brake w/ my left foot in my Comet 95% of the time or my right knee hits the stock "steer" wheel. Bad situation if u need to emergency stop.
In order to cure this I need to put a adj. brake pedal rod; I don't want to change to a smaller wheel. I've been driving like that "left foot braking" forever, so it's normal for me.

To get to the main topic - Manual or Automatic. As stated earlier it has a lot to do w/ preference. I wud like to have a manual - I love the sound of the shifting. If I cud have 2 cars the other wud be manual.
However, for me the auto is more practical. Living in an urban area and my knees having decades of wear and tear I think auto is best for me. Im sticking w/ my C4. I don't want to deal w/ all the stuff needed to switch to AOD or manual.

If I were going to make the swap I wud definetly go to T5 or Tremec. I cud'nt see going thru all the work and putting in 4 spd., even if I had one. I wud sell it and go 5 spd, "just me".

Manual for a daily driver and Automatic for a drag car. Best of both worlds.
