Hello guys and gals, What would it take to make this header work? https://www.mustangsunlimited.com/itemdy00.asp?T1=BA55+01 Jason 77 Maverick 4dr with 250 six
Two main things----will it clear the starter in the back and do you have an A/C compressor in the way of the headers number one tube. If factory A/C then moving the A/C compressor is required. I've looked at doing it for my 200 with A/C and have already got a fix in mind to move the compressor farther out. Just haven't pulled the trigger yet. I've looked at that header and it looks like the back tubes are formed to clear even a high mount starter.
Should know soon. I have a 76 Mav with a 250 I6, and I just ordered the same exact header. I was going to put it on the 250, but I have since decided to build a 81 model 200 I6 out of an 81 ford parts car I've got. That way I can still drive my Maverick while I'm building it's new power plant. The folks over at classic inline's say that the 200 is a better engine for a performance build than the 250 anyway. I did take a pretty good look at the 250 though. It looks like the header will fit without to much trouble. Before I ordered mine, I called Mustangs unlimited to ask if it would fit the Maverick 250. They said it's a good fit for a non AC Maverick with the 250.
The 200 is great engine...It had seven main bearings...which makes it "bulletproof" I have a non A/C Maverick with a 250. I just got the cylinder head done(Valve job, etc), and I have the conversion for the 2bbl weber carb. I was looking for a single outlet header for the 250...I know classic inlines has a dual outlet header...but I just had the exhaust system redone....ZI don't really want to re-do my exhaust system...just let me know how is goes with your 76 mav. Jason Also Do you have a low mount starter?....I have a low mount starter....That's one "problem" that I may have to work around.
Interesting, I had no idea there were multiple mounting positions for the starter on the 6's. I think it would be cool to build one of the 6 cylinders.
Yes both engines are LM starter motors, and The guy at Mustangs unlimited said that the header should fit ether engine without any modification. I've got my machinist modifying the later model head as we speak. I went with the weber carb conversion adapter myself. I hope I made the right choice. I still have to order a cam and a rebuild kit before I can really sink my teeth into this project. My original plan was to just hop up the 250 a little but to leave the bottom end alone. Now that I have decided to build the 200 I think I'll go all out. I expect to have a pretty radical little six ready to drop into my Maverick in a couple more months. I'll let you know how it goes.
"I expect to have a pretty radical little six ready to drop into my Maverick in a couple more months. I'll let you know how it goes" By all means, keep us posted on the 200 build. I'm a great fan of inlines and always post the following link to show someone what one is capable of when taken to the max!
Yes, by all means keep us posted on this! You must have one of those rare 200's with a low mount starter. Most of the 170's and 200's had high mount starters and all 250's are low mount. Good luck with your build.
Hey Gene, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one crazy enough to try and build up an inline 6 instead of just replacing it with a 302. Since you have already built yours I hope you don't mind if I pick your brain from time to time as I tackle my project. I didn't know this 200 was all that rare, but I have heard it's a real good engine to build. I got the engine with a 71 Maverick that I bought as a parts car. When looked up the numbers on the block, I discovered that the engine was an 1981 model out of a Fairmont or Zephyr. I plan on pulling it this weekend and getting it ready to rebuild. I'll keep you posted as the build progresses.
Haven't started the engine build yet. It'll probably be another month before I get it ready to install.
