Hi, I am new to this site. I have owned 2 1970 mavericks in the past and have recently purchased a 1976 comet. The cable that goes to the warm/cool nob appears to be disconected at the nob end. Do the nobs pull off to remove the panel behind it? I tried to pull them off, but not too hard becouse I was afraid of breaking them. I am excited to be a part of this forum. I was googleing my comet and found you. Thanks for letting me take part .

They pull off. Sometimes they can really be tight, but they will pull off. When you remove the heater panel, it must come straight out from the dash without twisting it. There are 5 plastic pins that break off very easy if the panels gets crooked.

Mine falls off too. I was thinking about some neodymium magnets I pulled from an old hard drive. I should be able to break them small and keep them very strong. I havent taken the plate off yet to look, but I hope there is some metal inside and back to stick it too.

That's a good idea. Some hardware stores sell the really strong magnets with holes in the middle and I have had some luck lightly sanding the back and using a good epoxy to mount them to plastic. (Ford uses them on newer headliners on the Edge and Flex around the roof opening panels) The IP is steel right behind the plate but the control fixture is pot metal.:thumbs2:

Mine were really hard to get off. I literally had to use a claw hammer to get enough leverage behind them to pull them off (put some tape on them to protect). I won't putting them back on until I'm sure I'll never have to take them off again.
