What do you guys think of my fab work. keep in mind this is the first time I've ever attempted to fashion anything from sheet metal. I made my own trunk drop, and then made the lower quarter out of three separate pieces. I know it's not exactly right, but I did do a passable job of duplicating the groove under the bottom edge . I'm picking up a bottle of argon today. That should make welding it in a bit easier than using the flux wire rig.
I think it looks just fine, esp. for 1st. time fab. Nothing beats a try but a failure ...IMO. Anxious to see the finish product.
Thanks Guys It really wasn't all that hard to piece in. I robbed some metal from the upper part of the quarter panel of my 71 parts car. It had about the same curve as the lower quarter had. The quarter drop I made from a piece of an old LTD hood I had laying around. I was able to salvage the very back end of the quarter panel from my parts car. It was a real pain to get it cut to fit the 76, but it saved me allot of time. That's one part I'm not sure I would have been able to duplicate. The underneath part thats grooved most of the way to the wheel well was the hardest part. I ended up redoing it a couple times. I've got some of it welded up already, but I was having a hell of a time welding sheet metal together with the flux wire, so I just bought a tank of argon/co2 mix and some .23 gauge wire. They say that will make the job allot easier. I hope so.
Homemade Quarters Update Here's a couple of pics of my progress so far. I had a bit of trouble with the welder to start with, but I finally got it dialed in. It took me most of Saturday morning to get the welding done, and the better part of today to get it ground down and filled. I was pretty proud of the fact that I only had to use a very thin coat of body filler to hide the defects. I've still got some work to do on the panel. I only primed it to protect it till next weekend.
