Hey, I'm not to familiar with my car, and am very interested in becoming more familiar with it.
In my latest quest to determine which engine was in my 72 maverick grabber i stumbled across this forum. However i did not find the answer to my question and was hoping i could get more help.
Here's the deal. From the forums I learned that i could tell the engine from the VIN. From this technique i learned that the car was built stock with a 200. However; The car was totaled a few years back, reconstructed, and a new engine was ordered from New York. So the stock engine does me no good. Any advice on how to tell what engine was dropped in my car? I have spoke to the previous owner and he believes it was a 170 that was dropped in but he doesn't really know for sure.

This is from the link I sent you in above post. The freeze plug is a round piece of metal that is concave shaped a little bigger than a quarter and is inset in the block you should be able to see them if the block is clean.

Freeze Plugs: The 144/170ci engines have 3 water jacket freeze plugs which are visible directly below the exhaust manifold, while the 200/250ci engine have 5 freeze plugs.
This is the easiest way to distinguish the 144/170ci from the 200/250ci engines.

I know for sure it's not a 250, its either 170 or 200. i guess hopefully i can see those freeze plugs and determine tomorrow.

In the summary it also says a 200ci-4 main (whatever that is) only has 3 freeze plugs as well while the 200ci-7 main has the 5 freeze plugs...and the only way to tell the difference between the 170ci-4 main and the 200ci-7 main is the block code.

You are correct, upon more reading I saw that statement as well. I guess it is a mystery until further investigation is done :hmmm:

I suppose so, I guess i'll look for that block code then and see if i can tell...if not i guess i'm on my own not knowing unless i wanna get the bore or whatever it is! I'll check it out a bit and let you know, maybe if i clean the engine up a bit i can see something!

I spent a little bit of time searching around for that Block Code. No luck, I found a lot of numbers...a few letters, but nothing which really struck me as the block code. However, i have no idea where to look...So if anyone knows where the block code is on a 170/200 ci please explain to me, and pictures are very helpful if at all possible!

Does this look like the metal tagging for the block code? If so, does anyone know how to tell from here the engine?

Also, I am not sure much about cars...Is this tube meant to lead to nothing or does it need to be reattached to something? :hmmm:
