Hello everyone! Got a '76 Maverick and am working on getting it to pass smog out here in CA. Got a few questions: 6 cyl engine, but how can I find out what version? Does the VIN give me clues? Not much labeling left on engine or car. Based on previous, how do I set timing? Thanks!
Ouch! You missed exception by one year. To find the original engine decode your VIN here: 1976 or http://www.classicinlines.com/Ident.asp And timing here: http://www.classicinlines.com/IgnitionTiming.asp or Ignition System
awesome! thanks! Yep...my luck lol Failed smog so I'm working on getting it to pass. Failed with high knocks, so I'm guessing it may be a timing issue. Replacing plugs (old), and trying to do the timing - just need to figure that out. Any other suggestions are appreciated.
What about the emissions part of it? Did it pass those??? If so then the hard part is done, give the engine a tune up and set the timing right. Also inspect your fuel system, make sure its getting good clean filtered fuel.
It used to be 30+, but then they changed it to 80 or newer, then to 76 and newer. It's been this for over six years now. Thank god I have a 75
also use arco gas for smog. it has the highest alcohol content of all the fuels and will run the cleanest. it will get you the worst gas mileage but its great for smog.
oh oi had no idea, no matter what year vehicle ive had ive never had to smog it so i lost track of the years
