i have a 351w from a 84 bronco, i've changed the oil pan to a frunt sump to fit my maverick only problem is the oil dip stick was made to go through the block on the year motor i got it off of and my bronco pan had a spot for a dip stick on it. so what i wanted to know is how much oil dose a 351w need? its stock and the new pan is from a same year LTD (basicly the same size and shape as the bronco but frunt sump i was thinking 6qt would do it but i'ed rather be sure then make a mistake and mess up my motor, thanks Stephen M.
because like i said the pan dosn't have a hole for one. the year motor i got this new pan off of the stick was through the block not the pan, i know where the hole goes in the block but dont really want to mess with it.
The amount of oil the pan holds depends on what it was for. My 351 holds 6 quarts - it came from a 75 van. what was your pan made to fit?
Plug the hole in the block and install a dipstick tube in the timing cover where it belongs. You can buy chrome dipstick tubes and sticks (in a package deal) at the local Advance Auto, Autozone.etc. All you need to do is drill a 1/4 hole in the timing cover (if you're using the windsor's T/C) or you can swap an earlier T/C onto the block. Using the dipstick in the rear of the block is going to give you false readings if it'll even go all the way into the tube without bottoming out in the pan.
Yep, that's what I had to do with my 85 model 302. Used an early timing cover with the hole for the dipstick, then plugged the hole in the block.
Ya on the late model timing chain covers they still cast in the boss for the dipstick tube I'm doing it on my 89 just got a chrome tube from jegs and drill a hole, wait till you get your tube to see what size hole you need to make it tight mine was 23/64 the joys of car mods. Don good luck
They have the dipstick and tube in a package in the Hi-po parts aisle. There's usually one for a SBC and one for a small block Ford at my local store. I did have to cut back one quart though with mine and the 9 quart pan I'm using, I had leakage problems at the pan ends till I reduced the oil by one quart, so that stick was a quart on the high side on the markings.
