i have a 250 I6 and when i start the car it'll rev up really high and then just die...ill try and restart it and i get nothing. It will turn over but wont start again till i try later. Any ideas what the h3ll can be wrong with it?? its driving me insane cuz i cant figure it out for the life of me whats wrong
High revs like that from a start sounds like the throttle is sticking wide open, or not even hooked up. not restarting could be the lifters floated out, check the return spring and linkage.
Could be the throttle onset is sucking the choke open. Also: You want to let the car idle or high idle with a little gas for a couple of seconds before you mash it so oil pressure can build up too.
i dont even have time to hit the gas to drop the idle, it'll idle high for bout a second it seems but then dies. I heard theres a good chance its dieing like it is due to fuel pump going bad. Is there any way to test it before buying a new one? New ones only $30 but thats alot of money when i have no income right now...
you're saying two different things here, first you say it revs up really high, then you say it will idle high before dieing. after it sits, does it start back up easy, or do you need to crank it a lot. if it fires right back up it don't sound like the fuel pump, if you need a lot of cranking fuel pump could be the problem, as coolvets said.
first time it starts, it idles high for a second or so then it dies. And after it sits for couple hours it will start up an do the same thing. But if i try and restart it, it will just crank over but wont start
found out its not fuel pump, got car started, drove it around the block and back to my house, and shut it off. Went back out to drive again and now it only turns over.
so the choke being closed would keep it from starting again? Cuz i even tried priming it which i hate to do, and it still wouldnt start.
true, i wasnt thinking cuz thats common sense. But ill head out today an adjust the choke and let you know what happens if it helps
You have to adjust the choke when the engine cold - not run for long enough that the block is cold to the touch. You adjust it so the choke plate just closes and then adjust the high idle (choke linkage to the throttle so it idles at 800 cold.
If you are going to work on your own car you will need a timing light, tach and a vacuum gauge - you can get them at the automotive tool section. You don't need to install a tach in your car but you will need one to tune it.
