Do any of you have them? Right now on my car I have the regular present day California ones but I do not like them at all. What I want is Vintage AZ plates, My maverick was first sold in phoenix and that's where it spent most of its life(up until 1992). I've seen a bunch of people in other states with the famous black/yellow California plates. But whats the proper way to get them? I called my DMV office and they said I can only get California ones from them(new and vintage style.) So do I have to call a AZ DMV office to get them, and will they let me get them? Any help is appreciated :Handshake Here's a picture of the original plates:
My car had the blue & yellow Cali plates on but they were pretty bent up. DMV wouldn't let me register it with those plates but I still have them. I've wondered if I would ever be able to use them again I'd have them restored.
What? I could get the blue ones if I wanted lol At least the lady over the phone told me I could. Black/yellow was until 72 I think, then they went to the Blue/Yellow ones. This AZ one I have is pretty bent up also, plus I need two. If i only needed one i'd just run this one
I was curious so I checked History of the California License Plate Basic information on 1963- present plates: 1963 was the last year a complete new plate issuance to all vehicles occured (the plates had a black background and chrome yellow characters). 1970 is the year the basic plate was changed to a blue background with yellow characters. It was also the last year any black/yellow plates were issued. 1976, year round registration started which requires a month expiration sticker afixed to the upper left hand corner of the plate. 1982 is the year when the standard plate was changed to a white background with blue characters with a sun graphic and CALIFORNIA in red block letters. It was also the last year any blue/yellow plates were issued. 1987, reflectorized plates with CALIFORNIA in red block letters were issued. The sun graphic was discontinued. 1991, only reflectorized basic plates were issued. 1993, the word CALIFORNIA was changed to red script. 1997, stickers were made with background colors that change every year and characters printed in black. Basic plates issued from 1998 through 2000 contain the words SESQUICENTENNIAL - 150 YEARS in red block letters at the bottom of the plates. 2001, the basic plate is white with blue characters and CALIFORNIA in red script. There is no writing at the bottom of the plate.
I have the blues plates that came on my 73 when it was new.Can you register out of state plates? Or are you just looking to have a set?
Not sure if I am reading this correctly but I don't think any state will allow you to register a plate from another state.
how would you go bout getting the "classic" plates for our cars in general? Cuz id love to get one for my car
Well I guess those two just answered my question, I wanted them to have on permanently....but if I'm not allowed to I'll just stick to the ones I have now. Thanks Guys!
theres a sight that sells refeb plate for all states and eras but they wont ship to particular state that plates are from
Most will ship to Tennessee. Tennessee will allow you to register a TN vintage plate to your car. It just has to be the plate that was issued when your car was built. I am considering buying a 74-76 plate from www.licenseplatesusa.com. Don't know much about the seller, but it is one I found that sells vintage plates.
Maryland also let you run vintage plates. If you have a set of plate that were issued the year your car was manufactured you can run them and have them linked to your current plates. You just have to keep the current plates in the car and you can run the vintage plates on the front and back.
They do that here, but our plates have been the same color since 1971, they just have a different quote on the bottom of them.
