I just bought a 1974 comet today, 2-door with a V8. I've been looking for a 70's maverick or comet for a long time now, so happy with the one I finally managed to get! I've been coming across this forum a lot while researching cars recently, so I figured it would help to join. Quick question: does anyone know how hard it is to pull the front bumper off of these? I've seen a lot of pictures of 74's without the extended bumper. Thanks a lot.

    :Welcome:from a fellow '74 Comet owner.
It's easy to remove the bumpers, but it's difficult to get the Small Comet front bumper and even more difficult to get the bumper filler panel (aka stone guard/gravel shield), since Mav/Comet parts are not reproduced. All the other parts such as mounting brackets, valences ect. are interchangeable from the Maverick. If you do a search on bumper swap you'll find a lot of info. Also use the classified section here to see parts for sale or post a wanted ad.

Welcome! A bumper swap is simple but as mentioned before finding the parts is the hard part.

you really dont need to find a small bumper stone guard. You can just trim the big bumper one to fit, and notch it instead of the fenders. That method gives a much cleaner appearance, plus it's simpler.

    hey

im about to strip a 72 comet which has all the parts needed to convert except the frame work needed to mounts and theres an excellent article written about that ,,it was the holy bible when i did mine,,look at the pics i shot when i found a junkyard in earlier article ,,

my comet looks like great since the bumper change,,makes a difference ,,one hint get someone to help ya when u drop the front bumper onto your chest,,i had bruises for awhile,,that old bumper weighs a ton,,

Thanks for the input, but if I'm going to need to go part hunting I think I should probably focus on fixing the more pressing problems on the car first. But it is good to know that it's possible for later on down the road. And I'm not sure I have the equipment or artistic touch to trim down the old one, though that sounds like it would be cool. Thanks again.

:tiphat: Since the small bumper swap is hard to find parts and kind of pricey leave the big bumpers and spend the money on other important more needed stuff. Look at my big bumper 74 it looks fine the way it is.

Thanks, it really does look good. Plus I'm definitely enjoying a place to lay all the tools and bolts while I'm working under the hood haha. Also, I like to know that if I hit something it is going to do the least amount of damage to my car possible. Your car looks amazing by the way. The maverick has such a cooler grill than the comet in my opinion.

whats up, from orange. just got me 73 comet gt a couple months go and the engine bay is all torn down.

putting in a 87 motor, cleaning up the tranny with a stage 2 kit, and now im looking for a posi third member.

but, the body is in decent shape and interior is immaculate.

i know everyone is gonna wonder why i did this, but i changed the front to a maverick hood and now im trying to find a way to install bobcat taillights. just got to do some fab work.
