My 71 comet with a 302 and c4 is having an issue jumping into reverse. Whenever you shift from any gear into reverse the car jolts back. It doesnt jump going from park into drive. Any ideas?

Hows the trans mount? My car changed a lot when I got rid of the collapsed trans mount I found. Much smoother into gear especially reverse.

First; lower your idle to no more than 600 in drive and 800 in neutral. I like to have my car idle at as close to 700 in neutral as I can. That will soften the engagement. The transmission mount, engine mounts and U-joints can and will all contribute to any jolt. Make sure they are in good shape.

The idle is just about right and the trans mount is ok. It doesnt jolt going into drive, which is the confusing part to me...why would it only jolt when going into reverse? Thanks for the responses

The drive train torques in the opposite direction when going into reverse. If the passenger side mount is bad it would allow the engine to jump but only in reverse.

If you haven't had the bands adjusted for awhile, try that. Loose band adjustment,as well as what others have covered can cause this!:)
