ok i just got my car two weeks ago it is a 1972 2-door w/ a 200ci and a three speed on the column the odomiter reads 42,000 somthing every thing on the car is factory except the seats & floor boads someone just replace the floor boards & took out the bench seat for a pair of bucket seats out of something. The only things that didn't work on this car where the brakes & the column shifter. Which brings me to where i would like your opinions, i was checking all the wheel ends and i reailized that they still have the original pads on the back w/ material left. i know the back are originals because the clips that hold the drum on at the factory where still there, Now the front every thing looks to be original but they didn't use clips on the front because the bearings held the wheel end on, but it looked like it just rolled off the assmbly line. not to mention that the tie rod ends are in new shape with the exception of the dry rotted boots SO do you think it only has 42,000 miles on it
yeah it was a one owner car till this year but i'm the fourth now couple other guys had it this year the one i bought it from & one other
You can't go by still having the clips on the lugs holding the brake drum. My '60 still has them 'cause I always put them back on after a brake job. It's better to look at the wear on the pedals and carpet (if they haven't been replaced). Drum brakes have brake shoes...Disc brakes have brake pads.

Pull up a chair, get a couple cold drinks and "talk"to your Maverick, make sure you listen for your answer,,, Maverick Whisper er
The drivers door hinge is a good indicator on Mileage.. around 100k miles the lower drivers door hinge starts to wear thin on its bushing... Grab the door and try to wobble it up and down... if it has play its most likely a 100k mile plus car. Also take a good look at the brake pedal pad wear.
Things that could still be factory 1. cap rotor 2. fuel filter 3. spark plugs 4. water pump 5. Best proof! check the alternator, if its original then I would think the car truly has 40k on it.
Even if it does have low mileage, it is still a 39 year old car, and fairly likely that you will need to go through almost everything there. The good news is that it all will be in better shape. In my experience, anything that held a liquid will need help first in a car that has sat for a while. My daily driver is a really clean 98 Explorer Sport that has just now cleared 71K miles... low miles, but it is still 13 years old. Along with other tune-up items, I just replaced the original plugs and wires this weekend. Broke every single plug getting the wires off of them. Nothing was happy to be moved for the first time. Good times ... sigh. Plugs were soaked with PB Blaster for more than 24 hours and were still tight. You get to a point where age takes over instead of mileage. A rebuilt front end is likely the next job with this. Then I can get back to the Comet.
yeah it needed a master cylinder for sure its the orginal altenator, but the guy i got it from said that the guy he got it from said the motor was rebuilt, it doesn't look rebuilt to me cause i'm an engine guy and it doesn't look like the engine has ever moved, just someone spray painted it ford blue while it was still in the engine bay an didn't bother to clean it before hand(real crappy job)
