hey everyone ive posted a few threads about my rich condition on my mav and it still continues. im running rich to the point where my clothes smells like gas when i get out of the car and sometimes my eyes burn. the fuel smell from the exhaust is really strong. i have a 302 with 600 cfm carter afb carb. ive had the carb rebuilt 3 times in the last 6 months because they kept telling me it needed rebuilt. ive had the entire muffler changed. i have mixture screws 1 1/2 turns out.
do you smell like gas or exhast. if you smell like gas then your barking up the wrong tree. you may have a fuel vapor leak. i would check the fill pipe and rubber coupling in the trunk to see if they are leaking. if the fill neck is rusty it could have pin holes in it allowing gas fumes into the car. there is the charcoal cansiter in the engine compartment. it has a line that comes from the gas tank that is susposed to bring the fumes from the tank to the canister. if its missing or damaged this could be causing your problem.
i smell like fuel. if i roll my windows down then i smell like exhaust. its kinda like pick your poison...
Have you tried running(the motor) it while looking down the carb bores ? If it's using that much fuel, you should be able to see any excess somewhere. And as with coolvettes, if you're still running points ignition, that's a prime suspect for your problem. 95% of carb problems are directly caused by poor ignition.
Like the others have menitoned, verify your ignition system's capability. If that's verified, it almost sounds like exhaust is actually getting into the passenger compartment. Do you smell it when you drive with the windows up or just down, and if you pull air in through the heater case or fresh air vent, do you smell it coming in there? An engine compartment exhaust leak will get into the car and so can one that is leaking under the car along the tunnel. Turn downs are pretty bad for letting exhaust in the car esp with the windows down. It might be worth having someone that uses a 4 or 5 gas analyzer or a wideband O2 sensor to tune the carb if you're sure that it is running rich. Carb adjustment is a little beyond do this or that instruction. It's really more trial and error and adjust and test.
