71 should have had a cap with a screen in it, no actual valve. The later Mavericks 73-up I think, had a push in vapor/rollover valve with a sealed gas cap for evaporative emissions.

Does yours have a retaining ring like on the sender or is it pushed into a grommet in the top of the tank?

That one uses a push in valve with a grommet. Alot of Fords use that style and the aforementioned Lincoln, mid 70's-90 crown vics, marquis, F150's, E150's, are the ones that I can think of off the top of my head. Basically look for one used on any of those with a gas engine and with just one 1/4" port. It's definitely the push in, not the twist lok used on some 90's and up. They rarely go bad so it might be worth a trip to the salvage yard if your parts stores can't get one reasonable.

quite often the price increases are due to low stock and supplier changes. Good luck

My parts dept after their healthy markup is $55 for the correct one(the first one you listed). My cost is still around $30, special order.

I still think the salvage yard is your best bet. you could probably get one for less than $10.
