This guy has what I think is 6-speed automatic. But he says it only has PRND321 and I am not sure if he has that transmission where you can tap the stick and go up or down a gear. He should be here in 20 minutes or so, if he doesn't get lost, or get pulled over and ticketed.

My slicks won't help for traction too much. I have a stock converter. I expect more improvement from the smaller diameter tire and the MUCH lighter tire/rim package. Less rotational mass and less torque wasted through the taller tires.

The 5.0 stangs are making between 420 and 435 at the rear wheels...The 412HP from Ford is a conservative # to keep insurance/tree huggers and the NTSB happy... You will probably get your butt handed to you Scott. Either way it will be a good time. Enjoy it!!!

420 -435hp at the flywheel not the tires ive seen as high as 395hp at the tires with a manual 380hp with an auto

with your car being 600-700lbs lighter should be a good race but the driver will make the difference i think, good luck:thumbs2:

I'd be amazed if your Maverick even came close to beating it. The 5.0's are pretty wild.

I think it depends who can drive best at the track. Should be interesting.

a local tuner did a baseline run and I think he said it made around 390hp to the tires

It was fast, but hard to tell if it was faster than the mav.

The best benefit...A/C while being fast.

We argued, he thought my mav was faster, I thought his mustang was faster, it might just be it feels faster when you are in the passenger seat.

We will hit the track for real numbers later in the year when it cools down a bit. Too hot to go racing right now (breaking hi temp records for the past two weeks).

But, overall, my first impression of the 5.0 mustang??? It is VERY nice!!!

Is your 350-360 to the wheels or flywheel? The 5.0 really puts out about 430-435 to the flywheel.

If you're hitting the ground with 350 you stand a pretty good chance. Even better if he didn't order the optional 3.73 gears and has the 3.31s in back :)

Oh and my theory on the 412 HP rating is that Ford ran 87 octane gas in the official test rating and the motor de-tuned itself accordingly. On 91-93 octane it hits 430-435.

:yup: also, a smaller car tends to feel faster than a larger car that is comparable ...
you add claustrophobia to the fact that you aren't hanging onto a steering wheel and don't have a brake pedal in front of you ... :biglaugh:

Sounds like a really fun exercise.

Just imagine one of those Coyote's howling between the fenders of a lightweight like the Maverick???? For cubic inch size, nothing touches this engine. Ford really knocked this one out of the park. Hail to the chief!!! :yup:

Trust me...I was imagining... That engine is HUGE though. I would really need to lose the shock towers and slap in an MII rack and pinion.

He is complaining about the options offered with the 5.0. He got stuck with the highway gears, and is quite upset, especially after riding in mine with the 3.80 gears.

There is something to be said about having the steering wheel in front of you and in your hands. It really DOES make the car feel slower. Being in CONTROL is nice. And makes you feel a bit more at ease. When my tail is sliding around corners, I have no fear, and feel comfortable. But when HIS tail is sliding around corners, I freak out worrying about hitting the curb, etc.

He didn't know what a line lock was. So THAT was an experience for him

I would think you need to be running in the 12's on the 1/4 mile to beat a new 5.0 Mustang ...

I told him to turn the traction control off for his drive home. He called me today and said it was a "whole nuther beast", and was chirping through three gears after burning rubber through the entire intersection.

He sounds like a very happy camper.
