Man I'm anxious about this, I hope you have a problem free run. Maybe you can mount a video camera to your cage and film some of it. Like I said I have dreamed about doing this for a long time, I envy you but in a good way. Good luck to you.

i was thinking we should put put temp gages in for the trans and diff. also a front air dam will make a big difference on keeping the front end down at speed. eric picked up some time with his air dam. we could make one out of metal that goes on with dzus fasteners so it could be taken off for normal driving and put on for racing. i also wonder if the air dam would help with gas mileage. i suspect it will.

I'm gonna need a LOT more room on my dash for gauges . . . but good idea, let's do it! my list is adding up, 9", front suspension, redo the dash, trans and diff temp, air dam, new tires, AC . . . and only one month!

I don't even trust myself not to die going 120. But at least I'll be responsible for just one person.

    So a buck 20... That's 120 MPH over a sustained 90 miles in a 40 year old Maverick. HOLY Crap that's awesome. I think :cry: :thumbs2::cry:

most of mo's maverick is less than 3 years old. he has the best stuff that will work for his needs. i do trust his car to be able to safely avarage 120mph for 90 miles. like in most orignized racing the safty requirements are really good.
the problem is my wife is a woman and women just dont understand

I've wanted to do that race since I first read about it in 1991! Good Luck!

For the record, my wife has told me to "get my life insurance upgraded before I do anything stupid like that!" (her words in response to the Silver State Classic and skydiving)

Chance of death is pretty low IF you take all the proper safety precautions. Tire pressure monitor, good quality new tires, inspected roll cage, fire suit, fire suppression system, Hans device, quality harness, quality parts and bolts. It adds up to a lot more than the $800 entry fee but I don't really spend money on anything else but the maverick and if I do a race like this I'd rather be safe. I KNOW I'm much safer than anyone out there on a freeway going faster than 55 mph. That holds true especially if you are in one of those newer ultra super light weight cars. At least thats what I'm telling myself :)

Well, I've run this race three times, all in my 97 Mustang Cobra (picture attached).
It was making 288hp to wheels, and I ran Z rated tires, the car had a Steeda suspension front and rear, I had 3:73's and never used 5th, I doubt you will also unless you've got enough HP to pull in 5th gear. Remember that the longest straight is 14 miles give or take............also remember that you have an average speed and a tech speed. I raced in the 130mph class and my tech speed, the fastest I could go was I think 142 or 148. Also remember you have a lot of turns..............A LOT, 90's, 180's, 45's, so you better have really good brakes or put some ceramic or metalic pads on before the race. Hopefully you have 4 wheel disc's!
You will get one chance to drive the course and I strongly suggest you have a co-pilot, good stop watch...................because this is a lot like a rally...........you need to be concentrating on driving, braking, cornering, and the co-pilot needs to be letting you know maybe a 1/2 mile before turn comes up....................You Really Need A Good Navigator!!!!!!!!
So, I had and still have a competition drivers license from the SCCA, and if you could to some type of schooling, even if it is at a local roadrace track near you that puts on NASA type races, you can go out and get the feel of the ole girl before you hit the real deal....................and yes, they do let cars go every 10/15minutes apart.............but at least you will all be in the same class.
Just to make one thing very clear here, RACING IS DANGEROUS.......please
don't take this lightly.................people have been hurt in this race and cars have been turned into junk..................you need to spend sometime going over the car before the race making sure every last nut and bolt is good.................loosing something at 120/130 could be hazardous to you and your co-pilot's health......................Good Luck and Keep the Shinny Side Up!

great advice, I'm definitely thinking of having a navigator. I have someone that's interested. I'm trying to figure out my tire and wheel combination.

olerodder(sorry forgot your name), I was wondering what tire recommendations you have since you ran this with your mustang wanted to know what you ran. I have another post and people recommended some pretty decent tires with good reviews.

I ran twice on Goodyear Eagle F1's, and by far they were the best. The second time I had 371/35/17's in the rear and 245/40/17's in the front. It was a little wet and I thought I might have an issue with the rear tires, but worked great.
The first time I had Goodyear ZR Gatorbacks and all four were 245/45/17's and they were just ok.
In any event, you really need to put some Z/Y/W rated tires on your car, not just because of the speed rating, but the sidewall flex could be an issue depending on how your cars suspension is set up. Now with that said all you really need is a Z rated tire.....................IMHO

ouch, Eagle F1 are $313 each, they must be great tires. I was thinking Nitto. Gonna look into them, Z-rated.
