to primer my car with spray cans? I just want the primered black look.
I was thinking about it. If I wet sanded it then wet sanded the clear coat I think it would look alright.

I guess I never realized that it was a "look" someone tried to do on purpose:confused: . I am not fond of that for a finished look but it is your car. You gotta do what makes you happy:) .

It is your car, I like the rat rod look that is goin around. But remember, primer is not paint. Primering your car and leaving it to the elements is asking for rust. But, I see you are in CA so maybe you dont have any humidity nor much rain, I know you dont have snow. The primer will absorb any moisture, rain, car wash, humidity and slowly rust your car. Just my 2 cents.

richard, when i took a body class, the instructor said if you want a good primer use the spray gun not the spray can. he seemed to indicate that the primer in spray cans would not hold up.:)

you need to get the gun to get a good even finish. My car is in black primer, and when I toouch body work up, I can never match the shade with a spray can, always looks heavier in some areas, and that's using the same color.

There is a growing culture of street rodding that will only paint their cars in primer. There is a club here that follows that rule. Most of them look pretty good and it is real easy to touch up!

Just my two cents, but even IF you could get the rattle can primer to look decent, you would probably have more money in buying enough rattle cans to completely cover the car than just buying a gallon of decent primer and using a gun. I'm not real hip to lacquer primer, but it is really cheap and easy to spray. Like I said, just my two cents.

Primer tends to be a big east coast, rat rod theme, That's how our cars are done, if if gets scratched, no big deal to fix the paint

If I'm not mistaken,it took about 9-10 cans to put my 73 grabber "in the prime".It oughta last a few years as long as it was sanded a little before you spray.Cheap and easy to touch up!Just buy a few xtra cans & keep 'em handy! If thats the look you want,go for it.Everything I had with nice paint either got scratched up,wrecked or sold before either of those happened anyway.

I heard the same thing Don is talking about. To do it the right way (if you ever plan to paint over it) spray gun it on, othewise all your prep work will have been for nothing when you have to redo it.

I had an old 74 dart once, that I just wanted to get rid of that crap yellow color, so I primered it black. 10 cans EASY. hell, I used one can alone on a dash I painted recently (interior dye) so to do this right, it's gonna cost a small fortune in primer.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! rattle cans! unless you can get a local paint house to put urathane primer in cans for you. You are just creating more work for down the road. Urathane primers do seal out moisture and will wear for a long time. DO NOT use laquer primers, I know they used to but they are pourous and do not seal anything, plus they move(shrink and expand), in fact the paint house I deal with doesn't even sell laquer primers anymore. You can even get the primers tinted and if you want flames....no problem.

Some of the worst surface rust that I have seen was on a car that
    was primed but not painted.
Check into what Ward is saying.
